Hi all

i have a tumour in my oesophagus…it’s benign and I am sorry to be writing on here as I know it isn’t cancer however the way to get rid of it is to have an oesophagectomy and the only support groups are for cancer patients. I don’t know where else to turn to get good advice from people that have experienced this..some of the Facebook groups are extremely negative

I am soon to be 35, have a 6 and 4 year old and a very busy life. Would be nice to hear positive stories of the aftermath of surgery..I know it is going to be a long difficult one.

thank you for reading and sorry if anyone thinks it is inappropriate for me to be writing on here!

  • Hello and welcome to the best online support group I could ever imagine. My husband can't have the surgery but there are plenty on here who will be able to give you sound advice.

Wishing you all the best in your treatment.

  • Hi Lucky

Why are they suggesting the oesophagectomy if it's benign? Is it the size, the location or is it because it might get bigger?

I had Ivor Lewis esophagectomy on the 24th of September and if I hadn't been advised that it was my only option I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have had the operation.

  • Hi Anthony

the size is very big and it is extremely compressive on my lung and it is going to cause me some big problems at some point with breathing and eating.

it is the only option for me, trying to remain positive and make the most out of this random and unfortunate thing that is happening to me!

  • Hi there, my partner has a 10cm tumour in his upper oesopghaus found incidentally on a lung CT during endoscopy they’ve said they are almost sure it’s benign although I know how very rare that is. MDT also discussed and feel it’s benign however given the size and the mixed appearance they wanted full body CT and ultrasound endoscopy to have a better look and clarity what it is further, it was found early October and he’s had full body CT then called for an MRI that was almost 2 weeks ago. Hasn’t been called for the second endoscopy yet. The wait it so painful waiting for diagnosis. I’m praying it’s benign and I’ve done more than my fair share of Google and even if this tumour is benign given the size already it will need to come out. I’m so happy for you that yours is benign as will be everyone on this group, but I appreciate how daunting the thought of the surgery will be. Can I ask how did they diagnose it benign and how long did this take? Did you have any symptoms? Also keep the group posted as someone who’s had the surgery will answer you and it’s such a helpful and supportive group. Sending you lots of love and strength.

  • Yes you have to take this option Lucky. Even though during Ivor Lewis the longest part is the oesophagectomy it's actually the stomach removal that is the most life changing afterwards. Are they planning on a complete removal or part?

  • Hi Bob can I ask did you have complete removal or part? Thank you claire x

  • I had half of my stomach and I think around a third of my oesophagus removed

  • Hi Claire

i had about 6 weeks from initial finding to the results of the ultrasound and endoscopy. I am under Salford royal and they have been amazing and, praying for you both and hope you get the outcome you want!

  • Hello,

thank you, that is interesting! I didn’t realise that all these symptoms may not apply. No stomach will be removed just completely readjusted as having full oesophogus removed

  • Thank you so I guess that’s about the wait time all round. Was it endoscopy that confirmed it benign? Did you have any symptoms that made you go checked out and where in the oesophagus is your tumour located? So sorry for all the questions.
