Hi Everyone - I am going in to hospital next week to get my oesophagus removed altogether as I have two tumors top and bottom. I already have had my stomach removed due to cancer last year.  I have been very anxious about getting this operation and am dreading next week.  Can anyone let me know what recovery is like as I think it will b painful due to breaking one of my ribs.  I will be opened up in 3 places.  The operation is the same as for an esophagectomy except I will have part of of my oesophageous brought out on to my neck and will not be able to eat or drink again!! Have to have this operation as I have no other choice as my prognosis was 9 months back in February.  I would really appreciate any input any of you have to give.  Many thanks xx

  • You poor love, there’s no way  I could just scroll past. I’m sorry I can’t help at all as it’s the stomach forum I’m on really, my husband had his stomach out in Jan and we’re still learning. From what I understand having your Osophagus out is a longer operation than stomach but I think you’d know that also you’re in hospital longer, my husband was In 7 days for his stomach but the Osophagus seems to be double that time. I think if there is any pain it’ll be dealt with straight away. I just can’t imagine how you coping with not been able to eat again but as you say it’s better than the alternative and I’m sure it’ll become a way of life in a month or so but will take a lot of getting used to I’m sure. Just sending you big hugs and hope you have people around to look after you, stay strong xx

  • Hi Katiecrunch so sorry to hear you face such a major operation but totally understand it's your only option. I have oesophagal cancer too and they are going to remove part of the Oesophagus later this year. I have 2 months of chemo first.

They estimate my op to be 6 to 8 hrs which I am anxious about

I'm recovering from having appendix out as Pet scan highlighted a problem. I am  being treated at Churchill Hospital in Oxford and they have been amazing so when it comes to the major op I know I'm in safe hands.

I wish you all the best

  • Hi Grandad65  -  I am sure you are anxious about the upcoming operation but I had a 7 hour operation last year to have my stomach removed and it went fine so hopefully everything will go ok for you too.  I too have great faith in my surgeon here at Belfast City Hospital , just as you say very anxious.  Good luck with the chemo and your operation.

  • Thank you so much Sue for your thoughts and I had my stomach out last year too.  I'm hoping I will get used to not earing, they say I will not feel hungry so that is good.  Thank you again and I hoe your husband is recovering well.  I have my husband who has been my rock and looks after me so well xx

  • Hi Katiecrunch glad your op went well. I too have great faith in the team looking after me. The hope is that the chemo will shrink the tumour enough so that removal can be done by keyhole surgery which would be much better

Thank you for your kind wishes
