Hi, I have incurable oesophageal cance. I have just had my 4th chemo infusion and 3rd round CT to see if it's working. Our concern that it's not working is that my swallowing is getting so bad I can hardly swallow anything, or keep anything down. The knock on is that I'm losing weight. I even brought up my chemo tablets the other evening. My chemo nurse has suggested them putting a stent in, to hopefully help. She has also referred me to a dietician and my gp has just prescribed special drinks. Another query is that I've heard a few people mention that you can't drink cold drinks for 7 days after chemo. I've never been told this. Can someone please why? Thank you.
My dad had a stent, probably a bit late, when he got the point when couldn’t swallow one teaspoon of water. But he can now eat soft foods and soups again. He won’t be cured but he is enjoying some of his favourite foods again, impossible a couple of weeks ago. Sending hugs.
Thank you. This gives me hope to be able to at least enjoy some food again.
Only just joined the group on behalf of my husband who has been living with oesophageal cancer for over four and a half years. He has two stents fitted now and had no problems, amazingly he is still able to swallow most foods (keeps away from beef ) He tolerated all drinks very quickly, for him the stent was life changing. Hope you enjoy the same success.
Thank you for your very encouraging message. I had a stent fitted 2 days ago, but was in so much pain, I ended up in A & E. Tests and CT done to establish that the stent was OK. The reason for the pain is that the tumour was so tight when they put the stent in causing extreme pain whilst expanding. I'm still in pain albeit not constant as before, and on strong painkillers. Hopefully it will settle eventually and I can start to eat again soon. I find your four and a half years from diagnosis very hopeful.
My dad had the same experience, his tumour had closed the oesophagus completely. After a few days the pain reduces. Sorry you went through this. But dad has been able to eat much better since having the stent.
Regarding chemotherapy and cold drinks, Oxaliplatin is one of the four drugs given in FLOT chemotherapy. Cold drinks and food can affect the throat while it is being given and for a few hours afterwards. I was told no cold drinks as soon as they set up the drip but was told that it was just for that day. It continues to affect the body for a few days afterwards - most noticeably the hands and feet. I had no problem drinking a cold beer the next day - but I had to wear a glove to hold the glass.
My dad didn’t get to have chemo. I hope it works for you. My neighbour has had successful chemo. It’s tough though, going through it.
Hi
i have also had a stent fitted recently. My first one slipped down without me knowing causing pain, fatigue and nausea for 6 weeks before the 2nd was fitted a few days ago. Have your pain and other symptoms reduced with time? I’m unsure what to expect.
