Stents and what happens now?

My dad had a stent fitted yesterday. He has terminal oesophageal cancer (untreatable, with lung metastasis) and was struggling to eat or drink anything before the stent. He can now take liquid and very soft foods again. But I am so worried about what happens now. Can he live a long time with a stent? If the cancer isn’t being treated? What happens?

  • Hi Franniefanakapan

Love your log name ! hope I spelt it right, I haven’t had a stent but can imagine your concern, I have come onto your enquiry so that others may follow with a bump up the forum.

You should always speak with your Dad’s specialist Nurses or Oncologist regarding any concerns and possibly if Dad will let you go along to any appointments, the next step if the stent does fail is usually a feeding tube directly into his stomach -PEG-, possibly an overnight feeding etc but he will get sufficient food and fluids to continue.

I do hope you all continue to cope with what for everyone is a shock to normal life but hopefully he will continue OK- it’s worth looking up some of the advertised prepared food companies as they do specific variety of soft foods much like you get when in recovery hospital.

Take care and best wishes to your Dad

  • Thank you so much. The palliative nurses are amazing, to be fair. Thank you again. x

  • Hi Frannie

I am sorry to hear of your Dad's diagnosis, I truly know how this information can affect the whole family and how frightening the not knowing is.

The treatment for this type of cancer has made great advancements over the past few years, and little miracles can sometimes happen, so try as much as possible to stay as positive as you can.

My husband had a similar diagnosis,  terminal, no option for surgery and with liver, lung and lymph node metastasis, though he never had a stent fitted, his prognosis on life expectancy was (with treatment) approximately 1 year, that was in May 2020. Today, he is quite healthy, still undergoing maintenance treatment every fortnight and has returned, part time, to work, from home...

Fingers crossed they find the right treatment for your Dad.

  • Thank you very much. Appreciated. X

  • Thank you for your update I have also just read your bio. My husband is really struggling with nausea 3 days in from the infusion. Waiting for the helpline to contact us but am taking positivity from posts xx

  • Hi Jubsyp. My dad’s ‘nausea’ was halted dramatically by the fitting of the stent. (It was more reflux and wretching rather than nausea tbh, he said. Clear liquid with some blood in it, sorry to be graphic.) He is now back to eating soft foods he enjoys. He broke the rules today and had black pudding at a restaurant, with a soft fried egg and middle of a jacket potato with lots of butter. He couldn’t drink a teaspoon of water before the stent, without wretching. The nurses on your helpline should also be able to help with meds. I’m sorry your husband is going through this. I’m sorry we all are. Hugs.

  • Sending hugs to us all.  He has nausea from the chemo, wretching  and acid too. The helpline have just pulled his chemo until they speak to his team. Had his oncologist been there this week he would have delayed it. Unfortunately his specialist nurse didn’t ring me back when I needed to speak to her. The helpline are amazing, picking up out of hours prescription shortly. Thinking of everyone x
