Hi,
I'm new here. My 82 year old dad has recently been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and also a completely separate bowel cancer.
He is due to have endoscopic surgery tomorrow for the oesophageal cancer but I can't find any information about the recovery process, diet etc following this type of surgery.
Can anyone advise on what to expect? He's been told it's an overnight stay but I find this hard to believe.
Any tips on post op diet would be really helpful.
Do many people have radiotherapy and or chemotherapy after this?
There's no mention of what they will do with his bowel cancer. It's all very unknown.
Many thanks
Hi Ange, I'm sorry about the situation you find yourself in and while you may get some info from other on here, my advice would be to call your dad's cancer team nurses or Macmillan support.
I'm so surprised that your dad is in sight of an operation without anyone having discussed in length, what will be happening, why, and the outcome/ongoing treatment.
Good luck and best regards
Geo.
Good Morning Auntie Ange
I am sorry to see that your Dad has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer after also experiencing bowel cancer. It must be a worrying time for you.
I see that Dad is having surgery tomorrow for the oesophageal cancer and that you wanted some information. I will pop some information here that you may want to have a look at.
Surgery for oesophageal cancer | Macmillan Cancer Support
Oesophageal cancer booklet | Macmillan Cancer Support
This will give you a bit more information but I feel it may be a good idea to speak with Dad's CNS/team so that you can ask specific questions about his surgery and recovery so you can be best prepared to support him. They should be able to provide extra information regarding diet etc. It may also be an opportunity to ask about what happens next with his bowel cancer.
I hope this helps a bit. I hope Dad's surgery goes well tomorrow and please keep us updated.
Jane
Really appreciate that info. Thank you so much!
No problem- but I think the best thing is to have a good chat with his team so you know a bit more about his expected recovery- my nurse team were always really supportive and never minded questions.
