Hi, I was diagnosed last June with a tumour in my esophagus. Its been a real kicker. I have had chemo and radio therapy which I finished in December. But its took this long for me to start getting back on my feet, this was due to the dramatic 9st in weight I lost that left me extremely exhausted, I was unable to walk and became bedridden. I went and had a dilation of my esophagus which has helped abit and I'm able to drink and tolerate soups ect,
Luckily oncology are happy with the response of my treatment, tumour has shrunk , not gone but they plan to monitor me. I have no guarantees that it won't return but I intend to just get on with my life as I'm only 52yrs and have plenty of life in me.
I think what I'm trying to say is I'm taking it one day at a time. I have pushed myself and I am know getting about, planning to go on holiday in June, cancer is not going to win or take anything away from me.
Hi Marcia
Wow you are having a hard time but what a great positive attitude. I was diagnosed last June the day before my 50th birthday and finished treatment in March. Yesterday I saw a consultant regarding an issue I now have following complications I had, which I have been told is chronic and unlikely to improve and my response was it’s not going to stop me doing anything it just might take me longer or be harder than before. This morning I went for a walk and it was hard but I kept going for almost 2 hours. I am going to sleep now but I feel so pleased with myself.
I agree completely this cancer really makes me want to live for now and enjoy each day.

Hi Ade, they had a meeting yesterday but my abdominal fluid results weren't back. One of the nurses rang earlier to say they had come back today and that they were making me an appointment with the oncologist on 5/6.
Good news indeed, but the wait is too long. It's outside the 62 day guidelines for treatment start. Don't suppose I can do anything about that. Have told them to call me if they get a cancellation.
My fluid results wasn’t back at the time of first meeting with oncologist…. She assumed they would be ok and booked the chemo start date anyway. I rang one of the specialist nurses a few days after the meeting to ask her and she gave me results….yeah June does seem an age away. I think I was lucky to get in so quickly.
I had 2nd round of flot last Thursday and got to say although side effects still fairly mild definitely felt worse than the 1st round.
Hi Geo
I agree..I'd chase them on a start date. Make sure that they book in all the blood tests as well as chemo sessions. I know someone whose treatment was delayed because the blood tests weren't booked in and they put the responsibility onto him without telling him. I'm assuming you either have a port or pic line put in. For each chemo cycle blood tests have to done a couple if days before. The first set are baseline tests plus swabs. After that the bloods are to monitor for toxicity and if it's okay to do the next round. The last round they picked up a potassium deficiency for me but it wasn't bad enough to stop treatment but it meant I started taking a supplement.
Take care,
Suzy
Hi Suzy, thanks for all that info. Because I'm not aware of what happens you can't ask appropriate questions, you just rely on the medics.
I don't have a line in an know nothing about all the blood tests. I assume this will be part of my discussions with the oncologist.
Knowing that I will have to have all this done why don't they just get on with it. It's really frustrating. I don't want talk I want rapid action.
Thanks and best regards from me.
Geo.
