Hello, I am already in the lung cancer forum, but have now been diagnosed with an unrelated esophageal cancer. I have just had a bad time after an endoscopy and spent 11 days in hospital. I have had a stent fitted which is within the 48 hours expansion stage until this afternoon when hopefully the discomfort woill ease.I have opted for no treatment other than pain management. I am 76 and already have one cancer plus severe emphysema, no family other than my siblings and their families, who are all fantastic but it now feels as though life offers little but more health deterioration. This post may all sound negative but i am actually a very upbeat person and like nothing betther than a good laugh. Sorry i have gone on a bit long. I think I most want to hear of other's experiences now.

  • Hi Minimoo, a sad read indeed. Welcome into the forum though.

If we can't offer anything practical at least we can have a chat. It's good to talk.

I have OC and am at the beginning of my journey. I have been told that chemo, operation and more chemo is the way forward for me. I'm off in an hour to do a heart stress test and next week have a staging laparoscopy planned in to check for other stuff. I hope it's quite a long tube/camera as I'm a bit thick around the middle...lol.

You must have been in bits mentally being given a further cancer diagnosis. Do you have a way out of it or are you just on palliative care?

Don't give up buddy, some of the treatments available now are truly miraculous. Have you asked about trials or immunotherapy?

Got to go now Pal, take the best care. I'm off to ride a hospital bike....lol

  • So sorry to read your diagnosis and I think it's only natural that you're not your usual upbeat self. Sending lots of good wishes to you and that you get some relief from the discomfort of the stent and can start to eat a little more normally.x

  • Hi GeoFerret

I can't have any treatment due to other conditions, so it's the palliative path for me. I am still in pain and don't know wht to do. It seems i might have been discharged from hospital too soon, as still in pain and promised discharge medicines not supplied. (I now have them)  Weekends don't help as all but emergency care is not available. Roll on tomorrow.

  • Hi Minimoo, just wanted to say hi again. I passed my heart stress test the other day and am moving into staging laparoscopy next Friday. If that's ok can then have chemo and operation to remove tumor.

I can't begin to imagine what's going on in your mind. I'm hardly sleeping because my mind running amuck. Keep taking little naps when I can. How are you sleeping? Or are you?

I'm glad you have family around. Are they close by? I have a big family but they live all over the place. I have two daughters that live quite close and I have my wife too. Obviously they are all very worried and upset about my condition.

What sort of things have you got up to in your life? I bet you've had some wonderful times and no doubt some bad.

I've been a coal miner, a fork lift driver, a policeman in the RAF, a bus driver, a lorry driver, a manual labour, a pottery worker, more lately before retiring I was a maintenance engineer and trainer at Toyota for 27 years.

Retired in 2019 at 64. We bought a caravan and have been in it quite a lot. I'm wondering wether or not to sell it now. Don't think I will because that's a little like giving up so will probably keep it for now and look forward to using it again next spring.

All the best from me. I would be calling my cancer team for advice and pain relief. Weekend or not. It's not humane to leave you suffering, and in this day and age you shouldn't have to.

  • Great to hear of a fellow ‘caravaner’ lol .We’ve not used ours for well over a year but I still go into the garden and sit in it with a cup of tea and watch the tv ..Not quite the same as touring around the country in it but it  helps me to relax ..It’s become the most expensive garden ornament we’ve ever bought !! Smile..I don’t know whether we will be able to take it touring again as John now can’t drive the car we have due to his joints so we’re going to have to buy a smaller car at some point in the future if his issues don’t improve  .but never say never !

  • All us touring  caravan people must sort out a rally  somewhere  and all get together

  • That’s a great idea Nic Nac

  • Hi Minimoo. I am so sorry you are suffering so much. I really hope they can get your pain under control soon, speak to your Macmillan nurse and let them know how the pain is as you should t be sufferng like you are. You are in my thoughts and prayers SunflowerPray

  • Hi Apologies if my caravan post seemed insensitive…So sorry to hear you’re in discomfort ..From other posts I’ve read on here the discomfort after having a stent fitted does subside after a few days ..I’m sure if you inform the medical staff they can organise some effective pain relief for you ..Hope the stent is beneficial to you and you can eat again very soon ..Best wishes

  • Minimoo
