My husband is in his 7th week of treatment. He’s having chemo and radiotherapy. His main side effect is sickness and vomiting. He has lost his appetite completely and is losing weight. Any advice on how to help him gain some weight.
Hi Pinks
Sorry to hear about your husband, certainly know how sickness and vomiting can put people off eating in the first place and with some chemotherapies the change in taste can make eating much less appealing to.
I guess you may have tried the shakes/fruit drinks that can be obtained from the pharmacy, after that probably best to ring his oncology team as possibly a change on anti-sickness medication might help as otherwise he might need more support that can be provided by that team.
<<hugs>>
Steve
Hi, my husband is starting chemo on Monday after what seems like forever. His doctor told him that he thought he had OC on the 6/12, by this point my husband had lost 3.5stones since mid October. Our local hospital wanted him to have these shake things that had approximately 200 calories in, 6 x a day. How the hell they expected a 6”2” rugby player to live on 1200 calories was a joke. So after lots of searching with no hope, a friend of mine suggested the shakes to build mass from holland and Barrett. 1 serving is 1268 calories and they recommend this twice a day- so long and short of it, he now has almost 2600 calories and I also make it now with blue milk so even more calories! I know it seems extreme but I couldn’t see him starve and weak going into the biggest battle of his life. So far so good, he gained 2.5kg since the beginning of January!! His dietician, surgeon and oncologist are happy right now, so I’ll continue to spend the £37 every 6 days to keep him strong.
wishing you both all the best on this journey x
This is the protein my fella used to take before he was diagnosed as he trained a lot n was full of muscle, after chemo and surgery tho he cant drink them as much they are too heavy but he can split them up. Just a bit of advice for after his surgery (if hes getting it) he probably wont be able to drink 2 of those per day. Theres another drink the hospital gave him after surgrey I think they were fortified 400 calories ones instead of the 200 ones.
I don’t know about the situation around surgery but my husband has Peanut butter and banana smoothies with full fat milk fortified with additional full fat milk powder - Nido - available from Tesco. These have been the go to for my husband who has inoperable OC and has had times when he hasn’t been able to get anything other than liquids down. A regular part of his diet even when he is able to eat a little better. So difficult to get enough calories in!
I’ve also bought a battery operated smoothie maker so that we can make smoothies for him when we are away from home. It’s brilliant! Plugs in to a USB to recharge. The worst time has been when he had to be in the ED and all that was available in the food line is sandwiches!
This wretched disease makes ‘ eating ‘ such an ordeal.
Sorry to hear that, hope your husband is doing as well as can be, thanks for the advice but unfortunately after surgery my partner has not much stomach left so those smoothies and shakes he would have had before he is now unable to drink or he will be sick or get dumping its so frustrating for him. Its a different way of life now I guess.
I'm really sorry to hear about your husband's struggles. It's tough going through treatment like that. To help him gain weight, focus on small, nutrient-dense meals and snacks that are easier on the stomach.
