Hello all,
I had successful surgery back in July 2022, however I'm still finding eating difficult, I'm probably just impatient as I was advised that it can take in excess of 12 months for things to settle down. However sometimes I think why did I have the surgery! Obviously because its saved my life. Anyone here that can reassure me that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks,
It'll get better, Conn!
In my wife's case, it was about six months or so before things stabilized. But, after that, she was able more-or-less to eat exactly the kind of food we'd always eaten, just in smaller quantities (and with some minor exceptions - bread is no good, for example.)
It's major surgery, and everybody's recuperation time will be different. Hang in there, and good luck! And don't hesitate to get further advice from your medical team.
Hi Conn, in what way do you find it difficult can I ask? I had the surgery in June this year and although I can eat anything (only meat I eat is a bit of chicken now and again but that’s by choice as I don’t like it). I do find I still can’t eat much at a time and get a full up feeling in my chest where stomach is now. When this happens if I eat a mouthful more it will often come back up again, although I don’t get a lot of dumping but think this is because I don’t eat much at one time. For example, I can only eat about two slices of a small pizza and then may eat some more a couple of hours later.
I also find if I’ve had a bottle or two of cider for example, I can’t eat as much as the quantity of liquid I’ve had means there’s not much room left for food! I usually have to wait an hour or two.
Do you also get phlegm after eating? I often do. People in my support group who have had the same operation years ago, do say things settle down. One lady said she still can’t eat salad items 10 years later, but I can eat this no problem. I still don’t really get hungry as such but know I’ve got to eat.
i hope things settle down for you
