Hi All. I have had good results with FLOT chemo and am considering surgery. My Oncologist said the alternative to surgery would be radical chemoradiotherapy but most patients choose surgery and that is hospitals standard procedure for those who are fit enough. I was wondering if anyone out there chose chemoradiotherapy rather than surgery, even though they were considered fit enough for surgery, and what was their outcome. Julia

  • Hi Julia,

I share your anxiety about the surgery. I'm still in the first cycle of FLOT so a complete newby. I know others who are hesitant around surgery and are looking at immunotherapy.  The person I'm thinking about hasn't started treatment yet so a newbie.  It's the worry isn't it - possible cure with surgery but living with the consequences or trying a different route which could jeopardize the possibility of a cure but could have recovery without major surgery. My biopsy showed signet cell adenocarcinoma for me which seems more resistant to treatment so right now on balance I'm going for the surgery.

    Take care

  • Fortunately my tumour has responded well to chemotherapy and the Upper G I team seem keen to progress with the surgery. Going for fitness assessment on Thursday with anaesthetics team. Nurses very kind and supportive and have reassured me I'm in best hands. One minute I feel positive and next I go to pieces. How are you finding your chemo? Julia

  • Hi Julia,  so pleased that chemo has been useful and the tumour has responded.  How did you find it? I'm finding it hard and I feel up and down about. I keep thinking this is on my cycle 1. Its knocked me down physically and I spent the first few days lying around. My blood pressure has been low but I've been making an effort to move, etc. I'm just starting to feel more normal. Its daunting thinking about how much more there is to go especially with how fuzzy my head has felt. The fitness test is not too bad.

    Take care.

  • Hiya I also a newbie and had my 1st FLOT chemo which wasn't too good for me at all, iv been told surgery us the best option but didn't realise there is an alternative.  I'm T2n0m0 so quite lucky it's early stages .

How was you with the flot chemo if you don't mind me asking ?

    Thanku

  • Suziew I felt the same apart from chest pains and a blood clot onto. I'm really scared about cycle 2 Dizzy face‍. I too had fainting its so hard isn't it but I'm sure after we've done this we will be so proud of ourselves too. Good luck and a big hug too

  • I think we're new and this is a very brave new world with so much to learn. I'm starting to feel normal- thank goodness. I've got a cough so now waiting for the doctor. I feel like Alice in Wonderland- small things have become big.  Is the blood clot resolved? When fors your next cycle start? I keep thinking it will hopefully get easier as we get used to it even if its exhausting! I'm also going for a long term view - this is a few months rather and from this we can get years! Take care

  • I was told about chemoradiotherapy by oncologist when I asked about alternatives to surgery as I'm absolutely terrified of it. But he said surgery is usual route for those who were fit enough. Chemoradiotheapy and immunotherapy are usually reserved for those who are unfit for surgery but its my choice in the end. What a choice!! I'm totally stressed out with it all.
