Stable OC and possible stent

Hi everyone

My husband was diagnosed with both lung cancer and oespheogal cancer back in Feb 2019 (both different types of cancer).   He had a radical 6 week course of chemo and radiotherapy as they were unable to operate due to the lung cancer and his breathing difficulties.    After that we  had a 3 monthly check and PET scan and were told that everything had worked well and they would keep him under 3 month observation.    We were told in Sept 2020 that the lung cancer has luckily been cured but unfortunately the oesphegal cancer has returned.

The oncologist doesn't want to put hubbie under any further chemo and cannot give him any more radiotherapy as he has already received as much as he is able.  They are actually waiting for the cancer to spread before they will offer him any more chemotherapy!!!    The last 3 monthly scans have shown the cancer to be 'stable'.    Hubbie is doing well apart from now having trouble swallowing certain foods, occasionally being sick and having loads of mucus which does not help with his breathing.

We are currently waiting another call from the oncologist after his last 3 month scan and are thinking of asking for a stent to be inserted.  I am, however, a little cautious as I have read some disturbing problems that can occur when a stent is inserted.   Can anyone advise if this is a good thing to have or not?

thanks for reading

  • Hi PEB.

Sorry to read the difficulties that your hubbie has been having with the oesophageal / lung cancer , and the worry that the stopping of the treatment is causing.

Has the oncologist suggested any other forms of treatment? I ask because there is so much more than chemo and radiotherapy out there right now!

I do not have any experience of a stent to be able to say a good or bad thing about them.. like you I have read many stories, the main concern for my hubby and I was the scan results being blighted in someway when a stent is inserted, but I do not know if this is true? I also feel that if a stent is needed to help your Hubbie to eat, it might be a positive, this is something the cancer team can advise further on when you ask them.

Hopefully others here who have experience of a stent, will be able to give you their thoughts.

    Good Luck

  • Hi Peb sorry to read of your husbands difficulty swallowing food. My husband has oesophageal cancer stage 4 which is too high to operate on. Towards the end of last year he couldn’t get anything down food or drink, he lost 3 1/2 stone altogether, he then had a stent fitted which went really well now he can eat most foods but needs to chew well. He still has problems from time to time whereby the odd thing gets stuck but it does move with a sip of tea or a fizzy drink. He has regained about 1/2 a stone but his weight fluctuates if he doesn’t get enough calories down. I would say that it’s been a good thing to have the stent fitted in his case.
