Hello I’m Sam I’m 37 and was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer in January, I have had 3 rounds of chemotherapy and my last round is this Thursday, I have 4 children 2 under 10 and I’m finding life so hard, from sleeping to getting up in the morning to doing any activities, I’m feeling sorry for myself I know I am and that makes it worse, my partner is being amazing coming to all appointments, cooking cleaning looking after the kids and house but I’m not myself I’m tired constantly even on days without chemo, I need to go shopping but haven’t the energy, how do people live with cancer I don’t know what to do anymore

  • Everybody is different and it affects them differently. I bet you where tired before cancer running a house with 4 kids. Don't forget you have cancer, so you have ever right to feel tired and every right to get down now and then. You have the main thing somebody to support you and be there for you. Chemotherapy is hard I know it kicked me hard somedays. It's normally after the chemotherapy even a few days after when you feel the effects. Just keep going one day at a time. Hope things work out for you. I had the full works chemotherapy a full oesophagectomy. I had my one year post operation anniversary on 29/03/22. There's so much more chance of getting through things nowadays. I wish you all the best and hope things go well Dave.

  • Hi Samnyjo. I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in February and it has been a tough road so far. I frequently have times when I feel sorry for myself so you are not alone! You have done the right thing reaching out to this site . I find talking to people going through the same thing really helps. It sounds like you have great support at home which is great. Don’t be too hard in yourself. The tiredness is a problem for me too but some days I feel a bit better some days so I try to get some fresh air. How is your eating?

I don’t eat any food I’m on endure, I did have a feeding tube but it fell out, my appetite is rubbish all I can manage is ensure and juice, throughout the day

  • It’s not surprising that your energy is low. I am on my first round of chemo and the side effects have been pretty awful but I am feeling better today and that’s how it seems to go. It’s amazing what the medical teams can do these days and there are so many positive stories on this site. I hope that you are feeling a bit better today?

  • Sammy when I could only manage liquids my diet was protien drinks, juices(have you got a juicer?) My profile has recipes if you need some. Also have you tried soup? When I was really struggling my wife made me a red lentil, spinach and carrot soup using chicken stock to get some nutrients in me. You boil all in a pan and then blitz in a blender. Rice pudding may also be worth a try.
