My Dad has recently been diagnosed with Oesophagael cancer - this was found following an endoscopy which was a surprise as no symptoms but followed on from a FIT test through GP as had ongoing diarrhea and the results from FIT test were positive, also recently found following a PET CT scan has spread to Inguinal groin lymph node and a 2.3cm tumour in lung. Anyone give any idea on what if any treatment likely for this, his oesophagael cancer tumour is already advanced (4cm tumour) and surprisingly still no symptoms, managing to eat ok and no pain etc..

Waiting for appointment with Oncologist within next 3 weeks to discuss results and been told surgery not now possible due to spread.

Thank you,

  • Hi Mindy

Welcome to the Forum, and so sorry that your Dad has received the news that he has advanced OC,  from experience of being the one on the other side of the diagnosis, (My husband was diagnosed in May 2020) I know what it is like to be searching for information and wanting answers.

With regards to treatment, there are so many different treatments Chemo / Radio / Targetted / Immuno therapies and some people with OC may have a singular therapy or mixed.  The MDTeam will discuss the results of the PET scan and determine the best cause of treatment based on those results and any other known medical conditions Dad may already have.

Google can be quite frightening when you read up on OC, some of it's comments are out dated, and treatment has really improved, often giving people with OC better outcomes.

My husband, like your Dad has advanced OC and was advised no surgery due to the spread to his Liver, Lung and Lymphnodes...  It is something of a miracle to say, after a very poor diagnosis, Dal is coming up to 2 years since diagnosis and his now on targetted therapy, which has been a godsend.

I imagine that you have searched the site for information already, but just in case you haven't THIS is the link to the OC information. There are many posts on this site which tell of others stories and I hope you will be able to share Dad's story with us also, or indeed Dad may want to join and share his thougths?

We have a great Family and Friends Forum HERE which you may also like to join if you have not done so already, it is a good support group and if Dad needs any further help or advice he can contact the Macmillan team on the number in my signature.

We are here to support you, and we wish you Dad every success.
