Hi Guys

i was diagnosed with stage 4 with mets to liver 2 weeks ago , prior to that and onset of reflux 3 months ago a very healthy 62 year old , running several times a week . Having a rollercoaster of emotions ranging from a little hope to absolute despair . Having liver biopsy on Tuesday, then starting treatment with radiation, followed by chemotherapy and possibly immuno. How to cope best is the question,  to those that have trodden this path?

  • Hey Wayne, sorry to hear about your news. Similar to you, but only 35 I'm also stage 4 with secondary down near my kidney in my lymthnodes. Lots of people in here have been diagnosed as stage 4 which basically means you are inoperable, but things can change mate. Time to believe in the doctors, ensure you get the right nutrition in you and be positive. I could barely eat soup when j started my journey about 4 months ago, since starting chemo I been getting better and better and have scans coming up with a hope that things have changed. How you feeling physically? You eating OK?

Vinny thanks so much for the words of hope , I am still able to eat if I chew well . Feel tired and ache all over ( is that normal? ) . Fingers crossed I have similar progress . Wayne

  • There is a brilliant charity called the Cancer club for men like us buddy which i recommend signing up to. There is a group chat where we all help eachother and talk about symptoms. I am tired a lot from my treatment, I didn't get it before. I imagine you are emotionally drained though mate after hearing your news.

  • Welcome to the forum Wayne

I am sorry to read of your stage 4 diagnosis with Mets in the liver, my husband was diagnosed in May 2020, with mets in Liver, lungs and lymph nodes, so far, he is reacting really well to his treatment, and although sometimes tired, he has returned to working from home 3 days a week.

What is the tumour type that you have been diagnosed with? My husbands is an Adenocarinoma tumour.

I remember when I first joined the forum, like you I was looking for something positive, something that would give me a little more hope... and in truth I found the best advice was to be as positive as possible, as hard as that is at times, it has certainly been the thing that has kept my husband going.

I wish you every success with your treatment, it is amazing what can be done for this condition now..

Thanks for the positive words and I will aim to  emulate your husband . I have liver biopsy on Tuesday which should clarify the type of cancer and the best treatment. I will at least start radiation at some point next week . What treatment did your husband have and is he still having any ?

    thanks again

  • HI Wayne

If you feel like a bit of a read, click on our picture and follow the link in our profile to the blog I have been writing for us.

Scroll to the bottom of the blog which is where it all begins and it will give you his (our) journey so far.

He has never been given radiotherapy and he is still undergoing treatment, Chemo/Targetted therapy -  he has this ever two weeks, a day visit to the hospital, and an overnight bottle of treatment to come home with, which can take between 24 & 27 hours to complete.

He has only ever missed one treatment having a holiday - and he has had two treatments that were 3 weeks apart to get him back into his normal cycle after finding something worrying on his lungs during a quarterly scan.

He has CT Scan and Echocardiogram every 3 months and consultation with Oncologist (over the phone) every 6 weeks.

He has amazed his oncologist on how well he has reacted to the treatment, with very very few side effects.

I wish you luck with the biopsy, once they know that the lesions are all the same cancer they will be able to swiftly provide approprate treatment, and as Vinny says, stay positive, eat the best foods that you can manage, fill yourself with foods that fight back too...

Keep in touch and let us know how it goes.

I clicked on moderator thinking it would take me to a page to comment on this page. Since the maintenance I've had problems posting a reply. Yesterday I posted quite a long reply but it didn't post. The same happened to a post to Haybag a couple of days ago but when I checked the next day it was still there. I clicked reply and it posted. The one I did last night to Norm didn't post and tonight it's gone. I can't remember everything in it but I posted a lot of information that didn't post and has now disappeared. I am not reporting Lowedal to the moderator, the system is getting more difficult to use now. Sorry Lowedal if anyone questions you. Regards Frank.

    1. Thanks Lowe’ very interesting and as I say so positive. Interesting why your husband wasn’t offered radiation as it seems standard from what I ve read . I take it the tumour did  shrink with only chemo ? Wayne
