Hi there

I am new to this forum and was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get my dad to talk about his diagnosis? He is being super vague about his treatment plan and will not give me permission to talk to his cancer teams.  I know he has oesophageal adenocarcinoma with synchronous caecal cancer (which cannot be biopsied due to bleeding) and have the contact number for both his GUI team and Colorectal teams yet I cannot ask them anything (which I totally understand but am so frustrated).

Thanks for reading/listening

    Hello,

I think your dad is just very worried & doesn't want you worrying too. But that only makes you more worried. You've no idea about what this means because you only know what he has, but to what extent. Is it treatable, what treatments are available, how will they effect his overall health, etc.

2 ideas for you, they just might shed light on his treatment plan.

    1.  Do another post on this forum & call it something like "Oesophageal adenocarcinoma with Caecal cancer. Has anyone had this?".

    2. Phone up your local hospice & relay your problem to them. They may not be allowed to say due to the confidential nature of patients records. But they might be able to speak directly with your dads GP or his case worker at the hospital. I stress they may. Or you could just ask how treatable & what types of treatment are given to patients with this diagnosis, just don't say your dad has it, make it a question in general terms.

If I think of anything else, I will certainly give you that information.

PS: Is your mother in the picture, can she be of any help?

    Best wishes,

    Graeme.

Thanks for the advice Graeme; much appreciated.  Mum is as such in the dark as me and I want to support her in whatever way I can.

    Hi,

Could you try telling your dad that both you & your mother feel ill because you don't know what's happening?

Once treatment is started your dad may have some medications to take at home, & that will tell you a lot about his status.

    Regards,

    Graeme.
