Hello,

my Mother in law was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus just after Christmas after being unable to swallow solids.

she has been told it is incurable but treatable. She has had two rounds of Chemotherapy and is becoming increasingly depressed.I have suggested she phone a helpline to speak to someone better qualified in this but she seems reluctant and she doesn’t use a computer.

Her husband is elderly and needs looking after himself. They have myself,my husband and her other son nearby so they are not alone in this and we can do all the practical things but I wonder if anyone here could give me any advice on the emotional side.

Thank you

  • Hello Fudge8282

Thank you for reaching out, as difficult as this diagnosis is for the whole family, you are very welcome here.

My husband was diagnosed last May, incurable but treatable, he was also given a poor prognosis and is currently having chemotherapy fortnightly as a form of maintenance.

I understand why your mother-in-law would be feeling very low and you were right to suggest calling a helpline, but if this is not something that she is ready for, maybe you could ask for a Macmillan Nurse to pop around and have a chat with her.

There are a couple of different OC tumour types, do you know which she has? is there other information that has been provided? How is she coping with eating at this time.

I have been writing a blog with my husband on the journey so far which starts Here  which you are welcome to share with her if you think it may be of some help

We are here, for you, for her, if you need somewhere to offload

    Take care
