Hi

I  had an oesophagectomy 10 weeks ago and since then I've been sleeping on 3 pillows.  Trouble is when I turn over in my sleep my head drops off the pillows and I wake up later with a nasty acid taste in my mouth.  Has anyone any experience with using a bed wedge instead of a pile of pillows?  And if so can you recommend one?

all the best

Ian

My husband used a bed wedge which had about 4 different heights and I bought in a disability shop. Positives : less waking up choking Negatives : beginning of bed sores - he did not complain and I did Not realise how these must be dealt with immediately. I wish you luck Penelope

I bought one then sold it about 2 months later. I found it very uncomfortable and kept sliding down it.  I currently use a pile of soft feather pillows to keep me in a comfortable, slightly elevated position which works well.  I will be buying an electric bed though as that will be the best solution - not cheap but shop around. They seem to be available at good prices in Germany, not sure what delivery costs will be.  You can get the VAT off if bought in UK as a cancer patient.

Guess we are all different but I used a wedge and bought mine off e bay.I found it perfect for me and used it for aprox 4 months  after op and now I use 3 pillows and one triangle type pillow.Reference bed sores the first couple of months the health visitor nurse got me a mattress for that so avoided all that.

    Hi

Nearly four years on, I still get stomach contents in my mouth if I lie flat, and I understand always will. I tried the wedges you can buy but found them uncomfortable, mainly because they only raise you from haly way up the bed, meaning you can't lie on your side, my preferred sleeping position, without bending your spine awkwardly.

We found a friend who was good at carpentry, who made us a full length bed wedge which he secured to the frame, raising the head end by about 8", tapering down to zero over the whole length of the bed.

My wife finds it no problem at all. Only down side to the idea - fine for a pine bed, not quite so easy for a divan type.

    Good luck

Hi Penelope, Charles, Griff and John

Thanks for the replies.  There seems to be a variety of experiences with the wedges.  I think I'll just try rearranging the pillows over the next week or so and have a rethink after that.

Thanks again and best wishes to all

Hi Ian,I'm still using 3 soft pillows stacked in a graduated pile. I found a wedge arrangement caused pressure to my lower spine at the beginning.

I find that I have much less refux if I eat or drink as little or nothing after 7pm. In the evening I tend to drink water or make a tea with boiled water and a couple of slices of fresh ginger. I prefer to manage this way of reducing the symptoms. Might this suggestion be of any benefit?

    Cheers

    Hi Jayem

Thanks for that.  I'm still trying different arrrangement of pillows and I think this is what I'm going to stick with.

I'd previously always used synthetic or foam pillows but now I use feather pillows as they are far easuer to shape and seem to give a good balance between softness and support.

    Ian,

I use a memory foam wedge (FOLLOW THE LINK BELOW) and a couple of pillows, I have also put a block of wood each side of the bed head, about five inch squire.

    Hope this helps

    Tony.
