Mobility concerns

My MIL has been in hospital coming up to 4 weeks now. She had a stent fitted around 1 week ago as the two feeding tubes they'd attempted failed. She is finally eating after almost 12 weeks without food, and is gaining weight. She had dropped to under 6 stone at one point.

Although her weight gain is positive her mobility has gone down hill. My MIL hasn't left her hospital bed in weeks, not to even use the toilet. We have been trying to get her to move more, even just sitting in her chair, but she hasn't been willing to.

Her legs have since swollen which is causing her some discomfort, she is also on oxygen as her haemoglobin levels keep dropping.

Nurses haven't really been doing anything to try and mobilise her, and it took until this weekend for a Doctor to actually say they need to get her moving.

I've taken in some massage balls for her to roll her feet on to try and help the circulation, but we feel a bit helpless.

Can anyone suggest how we might be able to motivate her more? We're concerned that if she continues this way she may never get home.

The chemo hasn't started either, which is why we're trying to get her stronger in the hope she can come home and she starts chemo in better health.

It really is difficult watching your loved one struggle so much and feeling like there's not much we can do to help.

  • Hi SMW

Sorry to hear of your MIL’s struggles .It sounds like she’s hit rock bottom which is understandable .

As she’s in hospital you would assume your MIL would’ve had a visit from the physiotherapist dept by now ! Maybe mention it to one of the ward staff the next time you visit , it may jog someone’s memory .I would also be asking why she is on bed care ? Is there a specific reason for this ? .

    Hope the situation improves soon

  • We have brought up physio many times, and have been told they're due to come, but just never do.

My husband has been really on with asking questions, trying to find out why she's been left like this and what they're doing. He gets passed around that much he never actually gets an answer.

She's just doesn't feel strong enough to get up, and they haven't really been pushing her to either. So over time she just gotten worse

They only ever seem to do something when he complains, it's been frustrating.

  • I understand your frustration as we experienced something similar with my Dad last year .We were constantly pushing for things to be done and we never received a straight answer !
In the end I used to just get him up myself and walk around the ward with him .(I’d asked before hand if there was a specific reason why he was being left in bed ?) Lots of ‘Erm I’ll  have to ask someone ‘ in reply , but received no clarification on the matter !
The problem is the longer they lay there the motivation to move decreases .This in itself as we all know causes it’s own issues .It’s just not acceptable.

    Hope it’s sorted soon

  • I don’t think this is good enough tbh. Is there a PALS office there. I would be inclined to take a complaint further as to be promised physio which doesn’t happen and is clearly needed is shocking. Is this a large hospital or a small local? I hope you can get some treatment in soon.

    G xx

  • That's exactly what we've been experiencing too!

My husband has tried to get her up and offered to help we've even suggested getting a chair and taking her outside for some fresh air. She just doesn't seem willing to do it. I'm hoping now the doctor has actually said she needs to mobilise more she will.

  • My husband has contacted PALs they've never responded. The patient services centre is never open when we've gone into visit either.

It's jusy not something you need on top of everything ekse!

It is a large hospital in the NW!

  • Update on my MIL.

The swelling on her legs was actually DVT and she now has PE ( Pulmonary embolism) on her lung. This was found on a CT scan which was done today.

My husband raised his concerns about her legs and they kept saying it was water retention even when her breathing became difficult!

She has started treatment today which we're told she has to be on for 3 months. The Doctor didn't give very good prognosis and said something on the lines off this is more likely to kill her than the cancer

She has been in floods of tears all day to my husband and our heads are all over the place

It just feels like it is one thing after the other.

They have also advised chemo is likely to be delayed again, although we haven't heard this from her consultant

The worst of it all is that we feel a lot of this is preventable if they just listened and acted on what is right in front of them! It's taken them 2 weeks to give her a CT scan to look into what is going on with her legs and why she is having difficulty breathing

I'm beginning to lose all faith in that hospital :(

  • I’m so very sorry. Sending love Rose

  • Hi

So sorry to read this , it’s absolutely shocking to think this could’ve been prevented and has now delayed vital treatment for her which could’ve possibly given you more quality time together .

I’ve no words that can make your situation any better but our thoughts are with you and your MIL at this difficult time .

    sending hugs

  • Thank you for kind words Heart
