Hi, my Mum had to have an endoscopy and gastroscopy on the 8th January as she has anaemia but this dropped even further despite being on Iron tablets. We were told at the time that it was highly suspicious and had biopsies taken. She was then sent for a CT scan which she had the very next day.
We were told on Friday by a Consultant Gastroenterologist that it was definitely cancer and it was in lymph nodes in the stomach.
They were then referring her to The Royal Liverpool as they are an Upper GI specialist team, she was discussed at their MDT today, and we were told by a specialist nurse who attended the MDT that they won’t operate as the tumour is pressing into the spleen and also because of where the lymph nodes are.
I am actually an Oncology Nurse myself so I have found it hard as I knew it didn’t look good. The specialist nurse asked if she wants to be referred to an oncologist as she could have palliative chemo. As I work in a Cancer Centre I was surprised that she wasn’t just referred to an Oncologist anyway.
Sorry for the long post but I was just wondering if there is anyone here who has been told it’s inoperable and has had chemo and if it’s gone well?

  • I had my operation in the Royal Liverpool They are absolutely fabulous your Mum will get the best of care. Sorry I can't answer your question but I know you will receive the best care possible

  • I’m glad you got to have the operation. We won’t see that team sadly with her being inoperable

  • I'm sorry to read about your Mum's diagnosis. My husband's OC is incurable so inoperable. He's on palliative treatment, FOLFOX with Nivolumab and on the Fortitude trial. All tumours have reduced since treatment started in September. Side effects are very uncomfortable at times but he's managing. He survived a bad cold at Christmas and a few dog bites after an attack 3 weeks ago. He is 63, has meds for high bp and cholesterol but otherwise is/ was very active and fit.

Hoping your Mum's treatment gives you all some quality time together xxx

  • PS The results from the last CT scan showed 'resolution' in the peritoneal lymph nodes. This sounds positive to us but might make more sense to you.

  • Im sorry to hear about your mom. Ita devastating. Even though you work in oncology you probably never thought it would be your mom in that position.

My dad was also diagnosed stage 4 as spread to the liver and surrounding lymph nodes- it wrapped itself around his aorta and pressing into nerves in his back. This was December 23. Told palliative chemotherapy only.

February 2024, we still going strong. Tumour is stable from last CT scan results in December. Currently on 2nd line treatment paclitaxel. Started with capox which didn't do much apart from the shrink the liver tumour and this is causing no concerns.

Was able to have 10 sessions of radiotherapy due to the pain and this was the most successful treatment as by the end he could eat again even though it took its toll on him!

He has gained nearly a stone since early December which we are over the moon about and he always seems to be hungry lol. He has gone mad on peanuts!l and had 4 rounds of cheese on toast every morning! While he can eat he sure is making the most of it.

He looks the best he has been and he is feeling good.

We just pray this continues just like everyone of us.

    Sending love

  • That's great to read about your Dad's progress, Kayleigh. Made me giggle about the peanuts and cheese on toast.

Sending love to you and your family,
