  • Hi W1cky,

I had a jejeunostomy feeding tube, the type that goes directly into the small intestine. I can't comment on the insertion as it was put in when I had the oesophagectomy. I didn't have any pain from it and I was able to shower with it in place with no problems. A bath was off limits though, the skin and stitches (3) holding it in place would have got too wet. The tube attaches to a pump which normally comes with a stand for use at home. I was nil by mouth for 4 weeks shortly after my operation due to an anastomotic leak which caused an infection in my neck wound so the tube was essential during this time for nutrition. I had to use the pump for 17 hours a day and most of my medication also went through the tube by syringe. The pump was easy to use, you're given instruction in hospital and need to be able to show that you can do it all yourself before you're discharged.

I can't say I was sorry to see the back of the thing when it eventually got removed as it is a tie but it did keep me alive!

Try not to worry, hard I know. Incidentally, I also had breast cancer in 2006 with surgery, chemo and radiotherapy. I also wondered what I'd done to deserve another run in with this horrible disease!

    Best wishes
