Hello,
My husband has advanced cancer at the base of his oesophagus, diagnosed 5 months ago. Chemotherapy treatment has yet to start but he had a PEG inserted three days ago. WE have managed to maintain his weight although there was an initial drop. He's feeling grotty with the cancer and is also a bit knocked out by the operation. Pain in shoulder finally subsiding but wound site still painful How long does it usually take to recover from a PEG insertion? He's 74.
Thanks for any advice.
Hello wesurvived
I hope you do not mind me replying as I had a different type of cancer to your husband but by doing so it will hopefully be seen by someone who has had a PEG.
I am sorry to hear of your husbands diagnosis of cancer and that he is having discomfort from his wound site for the PEG.
It may be worth giving his doctors a call for some advice or alternatively giving NHS111 a call if he is getting a lot of pain. I often phoned my CNS during my cancer treatments and had a 24 hour number to call for any worries. Often it was just a bit of reassurance that was needed.
I will pop a link to some info that may be of help.
And also a link for getting support over Christmas if needed.

Hope this helps and that your husbands wound site is feeling less painful now.

Hi there. Having a. PEG inserted can knock the stuffing out of you! I could hardly move for 3-4 days after mine, and it took me a week to recover, I would say. But I promise it will get better.
Hi
My Macmillan nurse had warned me that having a PEG tube inserted would feel like being kicked in the stomach by a horse and she was right. It took several days to get over the initial pain. I wasn't able to swallow anything so it saved my life, but I did find it very painful. I was 53 at the time.
