Retching after eating

My son has started trying more foods, after being on just a soft diet, and has no problem swallowing, but even after eating a small amount , slowly , he starts retching, and doesn't bring back any food but a type of muscus, colourless, phlegm. Is this normal

  • Retching or hiccups is a common side effect of some chemotherapy drugs, so if he's on that, it could be the cause. The white or colourless mucus is something I have experienced, I think it has been swallowed having been produced in my sinus. No cold, no chest infection, just mucus. I haven't asked any of the doctors about it yet. Please pass on my best wishes to your son, hope all goes well for him.

  • Thanks, it's comforting to know he's not alone

  • Anti sickness pills  should help with the retching. It's surprising but you have to 'suggest' things to the doctors sometimes and be prepared to stick up for yourself (and others). Sorry about the typos in my original reply the edit feature didn't work for me.

  • When would you take the anti sickness pill before you start to have your meal ?

  • its "as prescribed". Some say with food but it depends on the instructions with the pill. If your son is a child then the meds may be different to what an adult would have I guess.

  • Hi, - I had my operation early June and although now I can eat any foods I still retch sometimes if I’ve eaten too much or too quickly and always have mucus in my throat after a small hot meal. Sometimes it comes up but sometimes I can just feel it in my throat for a couple of hours afterwards.  I read that this is a normal side effect after the operation

  • Thanks for your reply. It's comforting to know he's not alone with these various odd reactions
