Hi all , my husband has  oesophagus  cancer stage 4 diagnosed May 2022had radiotherphy for 5 sessions in August 2022 and has now been having  chemo and immunotherapy for 21 weeks .A scan has shown the tumour has shrunk but  before hand he struggled to get food down as it was getting stuck and he was bringing up reflux then it seemed to clear halfway through his meal, now though it's very painful for him when swallowing food but it's not getting stuck   I gather this is due to a scarred oesophagus has anyone else had this problem and maybe could give  him any tips thanks in advance

  • Hi Kristalclear

sorry for the delay in responding to this post, and that you have not had any other responses.

I would suggest that your husband has a conversation with the Macmillan team, or ask for a dietician to get in contact, as there are many ways they can help to ensure that your husband is getting the nutrients he needs.

My husband has not had radiotherapy, so we are unable to give any thoughts on that, Sorry

  • Hello

My husband had an oesophagectomy in 2009 but about a year ago he started having problems with food getting stuck.  After a few weeks of gentle persuasion he saw the consultant again and tests followed.

The scarring after the surgery had gradually thickened and there was a stricture causing the problem.  He has had several dilations done and, on advice, stopped taking iron tablets.  His last dilation was earlier this month and no more need to be done for now (he’s had about 6) so hopefully the problem is solved.

I don’t know if this is of any help but OC can throw up so many different difficulties and I thought it might be a idea to ask the medical team about any other medication your husband is on.

    Take care, J x

  • Thanks  for your reply the hubby spoke to his consultant about it  and is seeing him next week to discuss  his medical treatment.

  • That’s good, hopefully the consultant will have ideas to help ease the pain and eating will become less problematic. x
