Good morning.
can I ask after having chemo and surgery for T1 stage how long people waited for a follow up check up. A harder question for me to ask is that after 16 months what is the prognosis of it coming back. My husband is coughing a lot again and finding food difficult to swallow and keep down. It is a struggle to get him to go back to the doctors as he is scared of the outcome as he doesn’t believe it could be anything else or treatable. I would really be grateful for any information or advice as we cannot talk about it together without getting frustrated with each other, X
I had T2 and was followed up annually, no scans just a verbal history and a quick physical exam of my abdomen.
I have heard that it’s quite common to need a stent or stretch after surgery as the join can narrow.
I can understand that he is worried but bullying will only make him more entrenched with what he feels is a decision that he has made for his own health and wellbeing. Help him to understand that it impacts on you too, and your life together.
Counting the days, making every day count.

Hello
until joining today I had no idea about stretch/stent or the possible need for it so thank you. We have a telephone appointment booked for next week so it’s good to know what I can ask. Thank you for your advice i know it is his decision but so hard to see him so worried the more Information I ask here the more I feel I know when to step back and what to do, he has cancelled appointments etc then I worry more for him. Thank you so much for information
onwards and upwards
This is a late reply - sorry. By now, you presumably will have had your appointment, which I hope went okay.
However in answer to your general question: my wife had six-monthly checks for the first two years after her surgery, and then the schedule was supposed to be an annual check for the next three years. The checks were really just general discussions with the surgeon involved, as well as a quick physical examination - certainly, for example, routine no scans were done. But we were very much encouraged to contact the hospital team at any other time if we did notice any odd symptoms, and they would then arrange whatever seemed appropriate (e.g. endoscopic examinations; CT scans; etc.)
I don't know the rates of recurrence after 16 months, but that can certainly happen. My advice would definitely be to discuss the coughing and the swallowing difficulty you describe with your hospital team.
I appreciate the difficulty you might have to persuade your husband to do this! But the situation affects you too, and the sooner any problem is noted, the sooner it can be dealt with.
Good luck, and all the very best.
Morning,
I’m unsure what stage my dad was at with his first diagnosis but he had successful chemo and surgery and declared cancer free in April 2021 then had just a verbal check every 6 months. The cancer has now sadly returned as of the beginning of September. His became apparent because of abdominal pain and really bad reflux.
Sorry it isn’t the most positive and I would have much preferred to have said something different. I would just advise he gets checked out, my dad was also very stubborn about going back to the doctors so I know its a battle to persuade them to go.
Sending love and best wishes x
