Hello,

I am a daughter to my dad who has got both of the above. I was just reaching out to see if anyone was has a family member in the same situation? My dad has never wanted to know his life expectancy which I completely respect and although he has allowed me and my sister access to his medical notes, I'm not so sure where he is at with his cancer or liver. What I do know from what I've been told and experienced so far is that his liver has not got any worse recently, but he is in hospital for the second time in a month with excessive fluid on his abdomen. He's struggling to eat but is managing better when he is in less discomfort with his abdomen. He seems very withdrawn, quiet and struggles to talk. My mum is doing her best caring for him at home and recently the palative care team have brought over some aids, as he is really struggling with his mobility and being comfortable.

If anyone has any suggestions of help groups or charities or websites where I can learn more about the duel condition I'd be really greatful. Ive come through a big patch of depression, which is by the by, but I'm just hoping to prepare myself as best I can and be in a good position to support my Dad, Mum ans Sister.

Also my Dad wishes to die at home and as much as I really want this for him.. I don't know how realistic this is?

Thanks for reading this

  • So sorry to hear this. We can only pass on our best wishes for your father and for you his faamily.

We cannot comment on his condition, so I would only say that the desire to de at home for a death is to be respected, but an open mind might be better. Nobody knows just what his life expectancy is and just what the care burden may be,

  • Hi Lexi

Sorry to read that your Dad has a dual medical condition, do you mind me asking which he had first?

If you have access to Dad's medical notes, it may be possible to contact the GP directly for some guidance on these conditions and also on how to help him to manage them.  Alternatively, it might be possible for the Macmillan team to point you in the right direction. Give them a call on the number within my signature and they will let you know if there is anything that they can point you towards.

Wishing your Dad all the best, and thinking of you.. well done for coming through the D Patch, Sending further strength your way.
