Hello everyone, I am new here and don’t know who else to talk to. My dad 73 was recently diagnosed in March with stage 2-3 adenocarcinoma esophageal cancer found via an endoscopy after difficulty swallowing. He then had CT, Pet scan, and ultrasound endoscopy, fortunately no mets/spread but they’re still not sure if local lymph nodes are effected.  They are saying treatment is likely chemo & radiotherapy then hopefully surgery.  How long does a session of chemotherapy usually last? Can it really be 8 hours long? My dad has never been hospital for medical purposes his whole life until this and I just don’t know how he’ll cope. He thinks he’s not going to survive treatments/surgery cause of his age Cry Is he allowed a family member to sit with him during chemo? I've never known real sadness and pain until now. My dad is my world. Thank you all for being here and I’m praying for you all x

  • Hi SS

îm a 77 year old female who was diagnosed with the same can er except it had spread to the nearby lymph nodes and liver. The intravenous chemo and immuno therapies are not scary or bad at all. I’ve ever had anyone with me but it may be possible. I had a port installed so they don’t have to keep poking my arms. The actual infusions aren’t that long. One is only 1/2 hour the other about two hours with flushing of the tube in between. It depends on the chemo. My  cycles are three weeks. Infusion on Thursday. Tablets to take at home starting Thursday night twice a day for two weeks and then nothing for a whole week. I’m supposed to have 4 cycles before they scan and measure the success. It has already made a huge difference in my ability to eat and drink. Everyone on here says stay positive. It does work and it is worth it. Good luck to your dad and you.

  • Hello, thank you so much for sharing. So good to hear treatment is working for you Pray tone2 This gives me hope! Good luck at your next scan! Two hearts

  • Hi

I finished my Chemo RT beginning of March, the forst 2 chemo sessions were 7 hours each as they normally hit the area with high dose, he may feel a bit tired and fuzzy head and possibly sleep for the first infusion, this is due to the other drugs they give you such as anti sickness and steroids, but the later sessions tend to decrease in yime to about 2 Hours.

At my hospital (Guildford) they allowed a carer to stay with the Patient, but, please let your dad know it is nothing like a hospital ward he will be in comfortable arm chairs and allowed to walk around - with his drip attached !- there is coffee tea etc and lunch as well with afternoon tea.

Radiotherapy is no longer than 15mins in total, I had it daily for 5 weeks, it's OK at the time but a week after it hits you, but you say you have had that so you know what to expect..

I can't mention the surgery as I haven't been offered it as mine is high up so they will not reccommend it so am in limbo until June to see if it worked but all I can say is I am on a full food diet without swallowing probs - even Steak now, my favourite. So starting to put back the 12kg I lost

Hope everything goes well and you know where we all are if you need any support
