2nd round of chemo

Hi all,

I had my second round of chemo last week, side effects not too bad again, hair has now come out so I’m wearing a hat or my wig when I go out. I’ve got a bit of a sore tongue which I know is a side effect but I’ve noticed everything I eat has started to taste either salty or sourish! Anyone else had this with their tastebuds?  I don’t add salt to food anyway but am obviously picking up all the salt in the food. Also slightly spicy foods are tasting spicier so I’m going to have to avoid these for a while. Teeth a bit sensitive too.  (Sound really negative! Sorry, don’t mean to).  At least I’ve not felt sick or overwhelmingly tired yet!

thanks all

  • Hi Browndog,

Glad to read that overall you are not doing too bad with d=side effects from treatment, unfortunately Dal did not have taste issues, his was smell...

I have had a little scoot around the site and have found this

Chemotherapy Common side effects of some chemotherapy treatments include: • loss of appetite • feeling sick or being sick • constipation • diarrhoea • a sore mouth • changes to taste.   Further info can be found Here

Hopefully the changes you are experiencing won't last too long

  • Thanks Lowe, have had more stomach issues second time round, stomach all over the place the last few days, not helped by a course of antibiotics I’m now on for a few days.  Hopefully coming to the end of the side effects now ahead of my third round of chemo on Tuesday!

  • Hi there!

I hope you are doing well.

During chemo, I found everything including water very salty  - rank. My husband and kids would make fruit smoothies to increase my liquid intake to help me from just drinking water. I tried many different drinks and juices to overcome this but nothing worked. You just need to persevere to see what works for you. You also might find what worked before may not work next time round.

Re spicy foods - i can no longer tolerate spicy foods at the level that I could eat previously before chemo. This might be different for everyone. Eating Walkers Sensations Sweet Thai chilli crisps now tends to burn the top layer of my tongue and any curries made have been spiced down and eaten with yogurt now.

Relay your concerns to your oncology team and they can prescribe you various different mouthwashes for you to try so some of your symptoms can be alleviated. If one doesn't work then try another. I used various different mouthwashes some worked and others didn't.

So just persevere. Tell your oncologist about the sensitivity of your teeth too. They can adjust your chemo so you don't have to suffer too much with any side effects.

Good luck on your journey and keep positive you will get there with minor bumps on the road to your final destination.

Positivity works wonders for your mental state and makes your journey that bit easier and bearable.

    Take care.

  • Thank you, can definitely relate to the spicy curries and the Thai chilli crisps as usually love these but they are too hot and burn my mouth!
