Our 81 year old Dad was diagnosed with terminal oesophageal cancer in September,  and there’s no treatment suitable.

since then we have been caring for him at home . With a weekly visit from the district nurses and Macmillan .

on the 22cd December his doctor referred him to the hospice but they needed dads spine scanned to make sure cancer hadn’t spread . So he was admitted to our hospital for a scan. The scan showed it had spread so he’s as been being transferred from our hospital to Christie’s for radiotherapy each day . He is now wearing a back brace .

on Christmas Eve at 8.30 pm they asked us to collect dad and bring him home ( which was nice to have him home ) but squashing him into a small polo car was horrendous.they told us he needs to go to Christie’s this Monday,Tuesday.Wednesday for more radium but no one knows the time, and how we are going to get him there.  Iv tried ringing Christie’s and district nurse but no one can help .I need to ring Christie’s in the morning .it’s a nightmare.

  • Oh Coco, what a horrid Christmas. Your poor dad, and the plans for his care have not been thought through, and you don’t feel in control in the slightest. On top of the emotions of having a sick relative’s palliative care to deal with, you feel totally out of control.
But you have a plan: to ring Christie’s in the morning. And they have a plan: to give him radiotherapy for the next three days. The problem is they haven’t joined the dots, or included you! so it all feels unplanned and disjointed, especially as transport is a problem. But tomorrow things may well be clearer: transport may be possible, times will have been assigned and you can relax a little.

I do hope things look up and you find the support that you need.

Counting the days, making every day count.

Aw thank you Brent .  Feel much better today . . We felt like we had no one who could help us over the weekend .  But finally this morning I managed to get in touch with Christie’s to find out dads appointment times . Now sorted transfers to get him there and the district nurses are calling tomorrow and hopefully helping us to get some carers in .
