Thanks Haybag, unfortunately a second heart condition kept me in surgery much ionger than planned and kept asleep for a day after that. Back home now and slowly improving and eating soft food along with liquid feed. I get minor discomforts but nothing that a paracetamol can,t put right.
Hi there. I hope you are recovering well. My husband is 58 years old and was diagnosed with stomach cancer in November 2021. He has completed first round of chemotherapy and struggled. He also has an underlying heart condition and is facing a total gastrectomy in 2 weeks time if cardiac condition allows. He is extremely scared and daunted by the prospect of life after surgery. He is at present saying he doesn't want to go through with it. Please can you give some advice and help with encouraging him.
Hi, hope you’re well.
I think that’s normal and I was apprehensive too as to what life would be like. But, what’s the alternative ? I wasn’t up for not having it and finding out !
Had surgery at the end of August in 2021 and post op chemo October / Nov (which was the toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life! - completely different for me to the pre op chemo where I wasn’t affected too badly)
Post surgery and like DBC I’m happier and healthier than ever, have had regular checkups / scans / blood tests and all clear currently.
Food wise, I went out on a Date Night with my Wife last Saturday. I had 2 x mojitos, an 8oz fillet steak with French fries and peppercorn sauce and a meringue filled with cream and fruit coulis for dessert.
So, it’s natural for him to be apprehensive but quality of life with no stomach certainly isn’t poor (I loved my meal on Saturday night!) and much better than the alternative if he was to decide against the op !
Hope that helps reassure you a bit …
