Hi Neil had a stent and now needs to sleep sitting up as gets really bad reflux if lies down, have got him a v pillow but slides down then constantly vomits, any help please on how to stop him sliding down many thanks Angie

  • Reflux, vomiting and aspiration are horrible. I take it he takes omeprazole or some other pip before he sleeps?

You can get a wedge pillow via the opa website https://opa.org.uk/bed-wedge-special-offer/  which might be better than a v pillow.

To prevent sliding a cushion under his knees may help.

I hope Neil gets some relief and comfortable sleep soon.

Counting the days, making every day count.

  • Thank you will try the pillow under the knee as says it’s not his v pillow that’s the problem it’s the sliding down and yes he does take omeprazole for his reflux not that it seems to help him much, he’s got a telephone consultation tomorrow so will suggest he mentions his constant vomiting

Hi chillipepper, he may think the v pillow is not the problem but I found being propped up too much caused me to slip down more. The wedge creates less of a steep angle and even with pillows stacked on top you can create a sleeping angle that keeps the throat above the stomach and stops the acid reflux. I was told by my consultant not to lie on my left side as the acid would run from my stomach into my throat and lungs. I slept on my back for over a year until the wound on my right side had healed fully, then I was able to lie on my right side without any pain. The pillows under the knees helped but isn't full proof. Good luck and kind regards Frank.

  • Hi

There's not much I can add to and 's suggestions. I use the OPA wedge and a pillow under my knees. I'm on Omeprazole PPI after trying several PPI's this seems to work best for me. But I take 4 x 20mg capsules per day despite this being way over the recommended dose. Obviously I was prescribed this. It works for me. When I wake at night with heartburn I chew an antacid tablet. Again suggested by my CNS. If that doesn't work I take a swig of Peptac.
