Hi everyone,

my dad has stage 4 and is receiving palliative care. He has got a lot worse recently since having a stent fitted.
he is spitting up a lot and seems to still not be able to eat well. He also has sudden pain in his chest which comes and goes.

we were really hoping this would improve his quality of life.
any suggestion.

his legs are swollen too and he feels exhausted all the time. Horrible seeing him deteriorate.
I’m constantly trying to get him to eat something but he is so reluctant .

any advice?

  • Hi . I'm so sorry you've not received a reply to your post as yet. By me replying it'll "bump" your post up to the top of the threads so hopefully someone will be along soon to reply.

I myself have a different type of cancer and not had this type of treatment so I can't offer advice I'm sorry to say. You could call a Nurse on the Macmillan Support Helpline, freephone number shown below, and ask for advice. Also give his CNS a call to ask advice about eating.

    Sending hugs, B xx

  • Hi I notice no-one has really responded to you. My husband has recently been diagnosed and was admitted to hospital as was unable to keep food or fluids down. They fitted a stent for him and he is now able to eat soft foods. The sticky spitting is because he is not eating. My husband had he same and it is disgusting!!!! However after getting advice and reading about it it is the stomachs way of coping with no food. Once my husband started eating (not very regular i must say!!) the spitting has all but gone. Still there a bit but nowhere near as bad. Hope this helps, take care xx

    • My husband also has a stent, it’s been a mixed blessing causing him to curl up in pain and non of the pain meds given so far have knocked it on the head. He’s stage 4 and is retiring early, in very early January (7 years early). The doctors, I believe, are trying to tread that fine line of taking away pain but allowing him some kind of life as well. His appetite is very low so I give him ‘Complan’ a drink I buy from supermarket, and he eats lots of ice lollies which seem to bring relief to his oesophagus. Sometimes he eats a square  of chocolate.
