Hi all, so just finished over a years counselling so thought I would share my own experience with you all and see what your thoughts are on Counselling? You know what’s it like when you first get a diagnosis, I had a meeting with the loverly Macmillan nurses and was given loads of information from group meetings, counselling, attending our local Myron centres, and almost a file of leaflets.
I was contacted on several occasions to see if I wanted to book an appointment for one to one counselling but just did not feel ready, my head I felt was not yet in a place where I wanted to sit in a room with a stranger and pour my heart out, but after talking to my wife, family and close friends I decided to give it a go.
so over a year later and with the help of my wonderful counsellor I know feel in a better place to cope with all the emotions that this diagnosis brought with it (terminal cancer) and my wife and two youngest boys have now also had counselling as well and we feel have all benefited from this in different ways, we often joked (as you have too) that it was only our dog (Stan) was the only one not having counselling!!
hope if your thinking of having counselling at some point it’s probably one of the best things I have reached out to on this journey.
take it east guys ️
Hello Again,
Thank you for sharing your positive experience of counselling with us here, there is, in my opinion, still such an undeserved stigma that goes with counselling so hearing positive experiences helps to chip away at that stigma.
Many years ago, I undertook three years of study in eclectic counselling resulting in a diploma, I was very proud at the time, but I used it in my working role, rather than looking at it as a career move. I truly believe, with the right counsellor we can all have positive experiences and improved mental health.
It is great to read the whole family (Stan omitted at this point ) have found benefit from there experiences, as you say, everyone finds something different that benefits them...sometimes, it's just being able to talk openly that makes all the difference.
Great News!
