Hi Everyone,
So my mum went for her second cycle of chemo today and they have said she can't have it because her bloods were too low, they didn’t say exactly what the issue was but recommended vitamin C so I can only assume it’s a low white blood cell issue! They recommended high strength Vitamin C tablets to get it back up to try again next week.
Has anyone had similar issues and can you recommend anything else in order to try and build her back up please.
Also does delaying chemotherapy have any effect on success of its efficacy?
(treatment plan: Radical Chemoradiotherapy - 2 cycles of cistplatin & 5fU followed by radiotherapy for 6cm squamous cell carcinoma mid oesophagus, early stage Tx, N0 or 1, M0, age 76)
Much appreciated.
Chris
Hi Chris,
Sorry that I have not responded earlier to your post, my reason is that I had hoped that others who have knowledge of squamous cell may have replied. That said, I am sure that they may come along soon enough.
I was sorry to read that Mum could not have her scheduled treatment, I can tell you that Dal had a couple of weeks off treatment, and he seems to be doing ok, and I would have thought that the reason that they cancelled Mum's treatment is that it may do more harm than good if they did not get her vitamins levels up. It's amazing what contains vitamin C, Potatoes and Peppers, strawberries and broccoli are all great sources along with oranges of course.
Dal started on raisins to keep his potassium levels up as this was a concern raised for him...
Is there anyway you can call Mum's chemo nurse and ask for advice? The Macmillan nurses may also be able to give you professional advice. Call the helpline for free on 08088080000, 8am to 8pm everyday.
I can't say for sure whether delaying the treatment would have an effect on its efficiency, but personally would have to believe in the knowledge of the professionals, that they know what is best and Mum's health and treatment benefit is at the forefront of their minds
I hope in the time between writing this and my response that you have already been given more information, it is good to read that Mum's diagnosis shows early stage growth, although I am sure this was a shock for you both at the time, the team in charge will ensure they can do everything they can to reduce or eradicate that tumour.
Thinking of you

Thank you Sara, Im thinking of you too, you've had a lot to deal with and I hope you are coping as best you can. Please look after yourself x
Hi Lowe
Thanks yes again for your king words and great advice.
Mum has been doing lots of smoothies, not because of problems swallowing but its a good way of getting a good mix into your body, especially when it might over face you eating them piece by piece. I must admit I've got into them too, they are so filling too.
Mum is back at the hospital this Thursday (14th) hopefully well enough for cycle 2. Fingers crossed xx
Hi Chris
HAIL THE SMOOTHIES!!! I have to say they have done Dal the world of good.
Fingers Crossed cycle 2 goes without a glitch on Thursday, will be thinking of you

Hi,
Just a little update, Mum's bloods were good today so she is currently at the hospital having her second cycle. CT scan booked for next Thursday to see how the chemo is doing and in preparation for the radiotherapy.
Thanks all and I wish you all well in this fight x
Great News, CT hopefully will really put things into perspective.. very anxious time in my opinion, Fingers Crossed there is more positive news to come

Hi Chris.
I'm glad your mum's bloods were good, and she's started her 2nd round of Chemo. Fingers crossed for the CT scan.
Mum has her last session of Radiotherapy tomorrow. She's been warned she'll be in a bit of pain over the next couple of weeks. Hopefully it will settle down for a bit to give her some respite, although we don't know how long that will last for. Just taking each day at a time.
Let us know how your mum gets on.
Take care of you all.
Sara. x
