Known Side effects of Oesophagus cancer

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the group.
My husband was diagnosed with Cancer of the Oesophagus T4N1M1 about 18 months ago. He has been through two cycles of Chemo, Oxaliplatin & then Docetaxel. His last treatment was March 2020 & since then apart from the usual side effects has been able to eat reasonably well, as long as he chews his food well. However a few days ago he had a really bad night and vomited a little blood and had a pain in his side. This eventually eased, but his condition really concerned me & I nearly called an ambulance, but because of the COVID situation he didn’t want me too. I wondered if anyone in the group has experienced this. I do believe it can happen as the walls of the oesophagus can break down, but would appreciate your comments.

Thank you Chris

  • Hi Crystal

I have not had any experience of vomiting blood but I can imagine it must be worrying for both you and your husband. I don’t think fear of COVID should stop your husband seeking professional advice. At the very least by telephone.
So many people are not getting the treatment they need because of COVID. While I can appreciate the fear (I am myself shielding), one has to weigh up the risks.

If an ambulance is too scary at least run it by your specialist nurse.

Counting the days, making every day count.

  • Thanks Brent for your reply, I’m not sure I posted this reply as cannot see it on the website, so I’m sorry if you get it twice. I think I will phone our Cancer nurse if I can persuade my husband to allow me to do so, I don’t feel that I can go behind his back. I would rather know what we are dealing with, whereas my husband is happy not to know, and I can understand that too.

    Best Wishes

    Chris
