Light at the end of a very dark tunnel

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to update everyone my dad had his MIE operation on  on Tuesday and is recovering well. The surgeon was happy with how it went and believes he got clear margins. He has had a couple of hiccups since in hospital, the first being his heart rate went up to 160 apparently this can be quite common after this type of surgery. They scanned my dad and saw that fluid was collecting in between his lungs and this was due to the tube moving too far up and pulling up his colon to high. So my poor dad had to have another surgery to pull colon down like a type of hernia operation. He is now recovering well and not really in any pain. He ate jelly and ice cream and a cup of tea today and said it was like heaven after 6 days of nil by mouth.

My dad says his only concern is how hungry he feels, he hasn’t seen the dietician yet, but he feels he could eat anything and everything?

The team in Broomfield Hospital Chelmsford I can honestly say have been amazing, they are under so much pressure with Covid but have kept us informed everyday of my dad. Also my dads surgeon Dr Jayanthi is an absolute advocate for the NHS, he has come in out of choice on both his days off to check up on my dad and to do the second operation when my dad needed it. We were all so scared at diagnosis but my dad honestly can say now from experience it wasn’t half as bad as he was imagining or expected and the aftercare is amazing. We know we still have a way to go with learning to live with this new normal but today we are so grateful we took the advice and went for this surgery!
