Hi all,

I was just wondering if older patients (70+) who have a good pathology and are in good health would be normally offered surgery?

Still waiting for results for my Mum but was just enquiring.

I know the surgery is quite significant so that's why I ask.

Is there any examples of this on here, would love to know.

Take care everybody and all the best to you all.

Chris

  • Hi Chris

I know of people in their 70s who have had the surgery and also others who haven't been offered it, through another forum I belong to.

I think the main issue for anyone needing this type of surgery is due to the right lung having to be deflated for a considerable time and how the patient would cope, but someone may correct me on that.

  • Thanks for your reply, that does sound quite severe, I just suppose there are a lot of factors they will need to weigh up in regards to whether surgery is feasible / beneficial.

  • My husband is 48 and had the Ivor Lewis surgery in June, he was on the table for over 9 hours, no idea how long his lung was deflated for during that time though.

If it helps my dad was 81 when he had his opp last year..They used him as a case study. The opp went well unfortunately they didn't remove all the cancer and is now terminal.
