Hi everyone my dads been diagnosed with oesophagus cancer which hasn’t spread but hes had a pet scan yesterday to doubly make sure and he’s been referred to St. Thomas’s for surgery. They have rung up and booked him in next week for the laparoscopy and if all’s ok they are going to keep him in and do the surgery otherwise it’s chemo
he’s lost a lot of weight and on the ensure fruit drinks but he’s still losing his weight and if he pushes it too far he start hiccuping and bringing up mucus we are worried he’ll be too thin for surgery plus with COVID round Did anyone else have the same experience and was able to get through it all please with this weight lose ?
Thank you Rebecca
Hi Rebecca
Sorry to read the news regarding your Dad's OC but thankful that he can have surgery. There are many great good news stories on this site for people who have recovered from OC surgery and carried on a good life...I am sure they will all reach out to you shortly.
Good luck with everything and stay positive. Hopefully it has been found in time.

I lost a bit of weight prior to my surgery, and a bit more after. But the dietitians are really helpful in keeping this to a minimum.
now seven years later, 2,466 days to be exact, I’m a bit leaner (dare I say better looking) than before.
Lowe is right you should feel thankful that surgery is an option. It’s the most reliable route to a cure. (Not that there aren’t some wonderful therapies around now, and they’re finding better treatments all the time).
The laparoscopy is to make sure that there are no surprises once he’s in for the big op.
Since my surgery and prior to this COVID thing my wife and I took numerous foreign holidays each year and we’ve now seen most of the world! So there is very definitely a good life to be had after oesophageal cancer.
So I hope all goes well for your dad in Tommy’s (a great hospital - with some great views!)
Counting the days, making every day count.

Hi Rebecca, I was in no rush to get the surgery done. I didn't have any other treatment prior to the surgery. I was struggling to drink the ensure milkshakes and I had lost 5 stones in weight before the surgery I was 8 stones and very skinny for me. I was also a smoker for about 45 years and I was 57 years old at the time. That was in October 2016 and I have now regained all the weight I had lost. Having a positive attitude and a dark sense of humour helped me get through it. Good luck to your dad and kind regards Frank.
Thank you for ur reply and letting us know about the weight ! I’m glad your doing well! Ived passed the msg onto my dad and he said thank you
lind regards Rebecca
Thank you he’s off tomorrow to St.Thomas so will know more then. I’m glad to hear your doing well and there’s a good chance he could recover.
Thanks again Rebecca
Hi Rebecca28,
I went to my GP in February 2018 with chest pain (it was stopping me sleeping) and bleeding. I had also lost 1/2 stone in weight. I had biopsies, a PET scan, ultrasound, laparoscopic investigation (which reduced my diagnosis from T4aN2M0 to T3N2M0 as my tumour was resting on my diaphragm and had not spread to my diaphragm) and several other tests. I was also treated at St Thomas's (surgery) and Guy's (chemo). Your dad is in very good hands! I lost another 2 1/2 stone during treatment. But have put most of it back on again and am still in remission! I expect your dad is well enough for surgery?
Wishing him all the best.
Hi Rebecca,
Just read your post, Ive posted too and my mum is going through similar. I wish your Dad all the best the very best and my thoughts are with you all. Can I ask how are you finding the processing of things due to the pandemic? We waited 6 weeks for an endoscopy (we live in the north west near Preston) and things seems to be going slow for us. My mum had her endoscopy yesterday and they saw a thumbnail sized growth in the middle of her esophagus but the specialist did say he's 90% sure its cancer but its early stage.
Can I ask if you don't mind what your Dad's results so far have been? Symptoms etc. Please don't worry if its too stressful to go through, I fully understand. Im just trying to gauge where we all go from here.
I sincerely wish your Dad and your family all the very best.
