Lactose Intolerance

I had Stage 3 T3N0M0  in the lower gullet area which resulted in my lower gullet being taken away and the upper quarter of my stomach to minimise any chance of reoccurence.    Chemoradiotherapy had got rid of the tumour and I was lucky in that respect.

Had the op and recovered fairly well from the Ivor Lewis op -  all seems a bit of a blur now - was in Sep 18 and improving as the weeks go by.   Have lost 3 stone but can now eat a small proper  meal.

However,  was still getting stomach pains and by chance at a check up appointment,  the dietitian was there to advise.   Explained that I was still getting severe pains and 'dumping' type syndrome and she suggested a lactose intolerance.

The upshot was that I would give it a go and fill my fridge and life with lactose free choices.

I have only done the lactose free thing for 2 weeks and feel a whole lot better -    hardly any pains,  only when I slip up eating chocolate!

Just thought I would share in case you are in the same boat -  would never have known otherwise that you can become lactose intolerant after the Ivor Lewis op.

Take care all and good luck x

  • Hi Harvey

I am back at GP to identify what is causing my issues. Like you, I am amount 6 years post Ivor Lewis surgery and always have had issues with tiredness and fatigue. I have managed up until now but totally exhausted and this is the first time I have been off work for 3.5 years but just wiped out. GP looking into Lactose, celiac issued, thyroid, liver, vitamin B12 deficiency, malabsorption etc. Here's hoping it is one of these. Main issues apart from exhaustion is cramps, pain in stomach, gas, constant churning in stomach, explosive runs, minutes after food or drinking. Do you also get B12 shots since been diagnosed lactose intolerant?

    Eddie.

I suffer greatly with fatigue, aches and pains in rib and upper back all the time, it never goes away. I also suffer with bumping syndrome. It sounds like you are getting it after food. The stomach churning and explosive runs is a classic symptom of dumping syndrome. I get the early and late. I know It's my own fault I have probably eaten a mouth full too much of some thing or eaten too much chocolate. My bloods came back okay about a year ago. I went to doctors yesterday as I found a lump on my throat, naturally I was concerned. Anyway it turned out to be a viral infection. I thanked god as I was convinced I had throat cancer. You do tend to become a worrier once you've had this evil disease. I use Arla lactose free milk and they do cream cheese that's quite good too. I have never been offered B12 injections yet I'm always telling them I'm tired. I don't think they know what to do with me. Take me out and shoot me could be the answer haha

  • Cheers Polly.

Thanks for getting back to me. Sounds exactly like my symptoms. I have had 2 weeks off work as exhausted. Do you work?

My bloods came back fine but after discussing the 2 types of b12 that show up in the blood that could give a false reading as only active b12 is used by blood, the GP didn't know this and is looking into this.

I have had a fast bloods to check for diabetics. Meanwhile the GP is treating me for a candidate infection threw our my stomach, intestines, UTI etc as this could cause symptoms. I still think it's lack of vit B12 and possibly pernicious aneamia.

Here's hoping they find a cause as I can really do with some energy.

Hi Eddie, sorry to hear that you are having problems. Have a look for Dr Mark Hymen it's about the guy microbiome. I know you have looked at this kind of stuff but he might give you information on gut health you have not seen before. Good luck and kind regards Frank.

It should be gut microbiome ! Grrr hate predictive text !

  • Cheers Frank. I will check out this guy's work. I was stunned when I had to inform the GP of the 2 different types of b12 in blood and that the current test does not distinguish between active and inactive b12, giving a false ok reading. My concern is long term b12 deficiency causes pernicious aneamia which caused many of the symptoms I have and can cause damage to organs. Anyway I am been treated for a possible candidas infection throughout my gullet, ut, stomach due to years using ppi ant acids which allows the wrong bacteria to grow in gullet. I do take pre and probiotic to tackle this but given an antibiotic to target candidas that will probably kill good bacteria as well. Will keep you posted. Cannot understand why the donut give me a b12 shot to see if this helps. Mind you I had seen 3 different GPS over the last 2 weeks! Eddie.

Hi Eddie, I believe that sodium bicarbonate is effective against fungal infections and can help clear toxins from the body. Prior to surgery I used to take a half teaspoon dissolved in warm water with a little bit of maple syrup or honey. It certainly didn't do me any harm. Good luck and kind regards Frank.
