Hi My Husband had his oesophagectomy 15 months ago T2N0 All margins and nodes clear. His voice was occasionally weak after the op but it returned to normal when he was not tired so sort of came and went. In the last 2 - 3 months it never reverts to normal and is always weak. This puzzles us as we expected this to get better not worse. Any ideas or similar experiences? We are seeing his consultant in a couple of weeks so will ask but I am a bit worried about it. Thanks Ann
Hi Aquila
My husband had an extremely weak voice following oesophagectomy and we have been told it is due to the recurrent laryngeal nerve which passes very close to the oesophagus and comes back up and supplies the vocal cords. He actually has a palsy of one of his vocal chords which stops it moving and so his voice sounds very breathy/like a hoarse sore throat.
However his has been bad since the surgery which isn't the same as your situation so I'm not sure that helps.
I think it's best to speak to the consultant and potentially get referred to ENT or a speech therapist.
Xx
Hi Aquila
I know your post is from a while ago. I have just had the op and am suffering the same problem, I was wondering is your husband`s voice improved at all.
