Hi all, my husband has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer on the 10th of April.
we went to A&E on the 5th of February as he was very weak blood test showed that he was anaemic and losing blood internally. They sent him home without doing any tests or scans. The consultant decided that he should have iron infusion and later endoscopy gastroscopy.
my husband had a fit test which came back negative. They downgraded him from cancer path and delayed his scopy to the 30th of March. This got postponed again because he was on iron tablets.
the biopsy and ct scan now shows that its stage 3-4. It has spread to the liver and lymph nodes. He’s on liquid diet since the 10th.
have an appointment with the oncologist on Wednesday to find out what will be the treatment plan.
please can someone advise me.
Sorry to hear your husband is so poorly. You have come to a great group which understand what you are both going through, my husband is too. Some good advice we were given is please stay away from google as it isn’t all true what you read. The time frame for what has happened sounds normal, when you go on Wednesday you should be given a telephone number for G.I nurses and they are fabulous if you are really worried about anything, they have an answerphone to leave a message on and they get back to you to help or advise.
I know it’s hard but try to carry on enjoying things you normally do as best you can. People in here are great helping too when they can. Take care Steph
Sorry to read you are both going through all this trauma. As all of us on this site know this comes as such a dreadful shock. I suspect that he has not yet completed all the diagnostic stages as most people report that they have a PET scan as the final step in the initial diagnosis. The treatment plans vary with the diagnosis and you will be best advised on this site when you can report which plan has been agreed for your husband. Others who have been with a similar plan will hopefully then respond to you. I do hope things go well for you both.
I am so sorry that your husband has this diagnosis. At this time my advice is to prepare for your consultation by writing down all of the questions you would like answers to.
In my experience Doctors will give a full explanation to any question, if asked. They do not necessarily volunteer information that is upsetting to hear. I would urge you to read up on oesophageal cancer and possible treatments so that at least you have the vocabulary to pose your questions. Cancer Research UK produce some excellent literature that is aimed at patients.
I was the wife of a cancer patient, so as a wife my advice is that it is important that both you and your husband agree on what questions you do want answers to on Wednesday. This is a journey none of us want to be on and we don’t all adjust and accept the diagnosis in the same way or at the same time. Understanding how much your husband wants to know is one of the ways you can support him.
Once you have the specifics of your husband’s full diagnosis.and treatment plan you will find this forum to be a safe environment to ask questions and to also share your experience with others.
That's a very good point you made about asking questions. Whenever we get to the 'questions' stage of consultations my hubby always turns to me (he says his brain turns to mush at these times, which I can understand). The thing is, I'm aware that questions I might like to ask aren't necessarily ones he wants to hear the answers to! Therefore I tread carefully.
He chose not to read the booklet he was given when diagnosed whereas I did a lot of reading here and on Cancer Research. With his surgery imminent (7th May) he's only just started to read the booklet the surgeon gave him about the operation. As you say, people vary greatly in how much they want to know and I feel that has to be respected.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
