Hi all I hope you are all doing okay

My friend has a CT scan in a few weeks after his treatment - chemo, surgery and  chemo.

Is this to check that there is no cancer? can this scan detect even early cancer or Lymph Nodes for example?

Has anyone any experience of this and explain the process?

Many thanks as always  :)

  • My dad has had the chemo, surgery, chemo regime and he's only just had a CT scan because he's on the Sarong trial. His surgery was in Sept. There was no mention of a scan soon after finishing his post op chemo so I don't really know why they want to scan him so soon, it might be something only his surgical team can answer.

  • I would think it is very likely to check there's no cancer, yes. I've had several scans - two whilst I'm hospital as I had complications and was in for nearly 4 weeks, one straight after my last post-op chemo last February, and have had another two since, and an endoscopy as part of the SARONG trial. I'm in the intensive follow-up group, thankfully.

Although waiting for results is anxious, I find them very reassuring. IF anything were to be found, it'll be found very early and treatment can start early, which can only be a good thing. I have another scan in May, and am in to see my team face to face again at the end of May which isn't part of SARONG, it's just them wanting to check on me.

Follow-up seems to vary from area to area, a bit of a postcode lottery as to how they decide, but personally I'm more than happy for as many checks as they can give me.

I'll continue to have 6 monthly scans for 3 years, and a yearly endoscopy for 3 years, then down to yearly until 5 years. This is what I've been told, but as I said, it does vary hugely.

  • thank you Nicky and Fairies - I really appreciate it! x

  • My husband had a routine CT scan part way through chemo treatment, it is to have a look to see if the treatment is working. We had an inkling that it was not, as eating and discomfort had not improved. The day after the CT scan we had an appointment with oncologist and she could have a quick look, and decided to continue with the treatment as it looked like it was slowly doing it's job.

It took us over 7 weeks to get the results, which I had to in the end, chase. The full report, was a secondary tumour and all treatment would stop, this was after having two cycles of chemo that h really did not need.

So my advice is really push for the results.
