After 4x FLOT Cycles my tumour has shrunk significantly, the dysphagia has improved and I've been given a green light for surgery this Friday 20/12!
I'll be having the full Oesophago-Gastrectomy, which will be 'Open Chest'.
I'd love to hear about your experiences and any advice you might care to share?
Thanks in advance. VV.
I’m sure your surgical team will have talked you through what to expect on the day. It’ll be a long and difficult day for your partner and they should be prepared for the fact that when they visit you after surgery, you will be connected to many tubes, wires, monitors, etc. It can be a bit of a shock if they’re not forewarned. I had my oesophagectomy in February which involved open surgery on the right side of my chest but the stomach part was done via a number of small incisions. You will wake up in intensive care and probably remain there for a number of days (8 days in my case as I had a bit of a complication). Physios will have you up and walking very quickly and I seriously recommend that you do the breathing exercises that they give you. Bring headphones with you to allow you to zone out from the sounds of ICU. Good luck for the operation. I’m sure you are starting to feel a bit nervous about it now but you just need to put your faith in the expertise of your surgeon and the medical team who will assist them. Let us know how you get on… CB
