I have been told by multiple professionals involved in my NHS treatment that post operation, follow up scans are not conducted. No one seems to be able to give me a reason why and the fall back is that follow up care is appointments with them where I would feedback any symptoms and how I'm feeling.
My concern to this approach is that on many occasions cancer isn't easily detected by the patient, so if the cancer has come back or spread, relying on the patient to give feedback that would indicate as such isn't a reliable indicator. By the time the patient does realise something is wrong it might be too late to do something about it.
On top of this, I see a number of people in this forum (and friends that have had cancer in other areas) saying they have follow up scans every 3 months within the first year to scans then every 6 months for the full 5 year follow up term.
This is making me anxious as to why the inconsistency and why I'm being told something else. I have been told I can pay to have scans, but considering others have these scans as routine I don't see why I should have to pay. I'm already going through lot having been diagnosed early this year, and now to have the operation, I don't need any more stress and anxiety. I can't see why scans are routine for all those who have had cancer for those 5 years if only for peace of mind for the patient.
Can anyone offer any insight into why this might be the case? As I said I've have spoken to a number of professionals involved in my care in different areas and they are all saying the same thing, "no follow up scans unless information suggests they are necessary".
Thank you.
Oh what a beautiful way to go. That must have been so comforting for all of you at what otherwise have been a very stressful time
It sounds like your dad had the best ending possible. It's bittersweet - the best that could be but still very hard. My parents were the same. I think you've hit the nail on the head- it should be individual choice. I was anxious at first around scans because the first one after treatment showed enlarged lymph nodes and although the oncologist reassured me that it was likely due to having had covid just plus surgery. I was still freaked out especially how hard treatment was and i had just finished post operative FLOT. All was okay by the next scan after 3 months. Now I get a slight bit of anxiety but not enough for it to affect my quality of life. To be honest im sure we all live the spectre of the cancer returning anyway so its not like we are ever able to truly forget. I would also like to be able to plan and make the most of my time especially as I have a child and other family who are very important to me.
Further to this I had my 3 month call with oncologist this morning and as no symptoms after over 4 months was told no routine scan. In the light of all these comments from you all, I said I would like to be fully informed of what is happening whether it be positive or negative. We know the tumour is still there and I would like reassurance that things have not got worse. So now they say I can have one in October, which is 6 months after the last one. I guess you just have to show you are concerned. Thanks for all the advice on here.
Hi Rosiecat
I’m pleased to hear you have been scheduled a scan at your request .My husband fully intends to do the same at his next monitoring appointment in December , hopefully his cancer has gone for good but it’s for reassurance if nothing else .
Wishing you positivity and best wishes for the future
regards J
