I have stage 4 oesophageal cancer and I am on a treatment break following a successful 6 months of Folfox.

i have developed a dry cough that is worse when I am talking or moving around. I have recently had a scan and  lungs and windpipe are clear and oncologist thinks it is irritation of nerves which run close to the oesophagus.

she suggested some cough syrup- has anybody had similar or have recommendations for the best cough remedy?

  • Hi,

    I found a couple of things that helped my cough;

    • Organic local honey
    • ’Airwaves’ chewing gum

    Cough medicines were pretty useless in my experience

  • Thanks, this is helpful.

    Did you take the honey on a spoon neat, or as a warm drink with hot water?

    I had a cough when originally diagnosed but it went away shortly after Folfox treatment started.

    it has now come back a couple of months after completing the 6month course.

    I’m wondering if I am now stuck with it, I am on three month monitoring with no further treatment currently planned.

    What was your experience?

  • My cough developed after my Ivor Lewis surgery (a fairly common experience for those who go through this) and was very painful due to the large wound I had in my chest and the fact that the surgery had necessitated the pulling apart of my ribcage and collapsing of one lung. I usually took the honey neat and let it slowly trickle down my throat. The cough was very annoying and took quite a few weeks to go away completely.

  • My Husband had a cough for ages.  Specialist Nurse thought it was a globus which is a sensation of a lump in your throat.

    However at next oncologist appointment he noticed when he asked hubby to stick his tongue out that he had thrush.  The medication cleared it up and he has been ok since.
