Evening all

I have used this platform on numerous occasions throughout my dads journey with stage 3 oesophageal cancer and it has always been an immense comfort so figured it may help for this next stage.

My dad is booked in for his oesophagectomy tomorrow & I am so worried about complications / what this is going to look like. He is 57, in great shape & has done wonderfully so far so I know he has a lot in his favour. But, never the less, saying goodbye to him yesterday has left me in immense worry of the “what ifs”.

I’m not even sure what the risks are (and have avoided google at all costs), I just feel very in the unknown and not sure what to expect.

anyone with any coping advise or words of encouragement / their experiences are so welcome. Thanks as always

  • Hi JsyStevie

No wonder you were worried that is a really long op but it sounds like your husband recovered really well which is excellent.

I think it's harder for the partner's because the waiting for news must be so stressful.

My op was 7hrs and my wife said that whole day was so worrying until they finally rang.

I was only in ITU for just over a day and home in a week so I feel fortunate there were no complications.I see my consultant next week to see how much chemo I will need but yes always start the painkillers in advance to build up the levels.

Hope your husband is continuing to recover well.

    Best wishes

  • Hi dean

dads operation went well and everything has been removed … he’s in a lot of pain as the epidural came loose and now they can’t put it back in so he’s on other forms of pain relief now! ( it’s crazy to think they used robots in theatre for all the cutting ect!!! Maddddd )

he’s still in intensive care since Friday - drinking 90ml of water every hour now which is good … and he’s taken 10 steps today which is great!!

the only worrying thing is they have told him they removed something near his heart ( not sure what it is so it’s been sent off for testing ) but everything has been removed! Surely if it was cancer it would have shown on the pet scan???! - so hopefully it’s nothing …

they have said he should be able to go on the ward in a few days … I’ve not seen him yet as he doesn’t want us kids to see him with all them tubes ( bless him ) but my mums there all day so that’s the main thing!!

after the op did you get another PET scan?xxxxxx

  • Hey , I’ve only just seen this!! Thanks for sending a message!! It was very worrying but he’s out the other side now!! Just needs to recover!!

how is your dad doing? My dads still in ICU atm so I cannot see him until he goes on the ward as he doesn’t want us kids to see him like that ( bless him ) just a bloody worry until you finally see them isn’t it.

When will they get another PET scan? I’m so worried about that and just want it to clear xxxx

  • Oh wow 11 hours no wonder you was going out of your mind!! I was worried at 8 hours never mind 11!!

hows he doing now? Did he cope with the next round of chemo? Xxx

  • Hey Nic,

So glad to hear your dad is out the other side! It’s so worrying but they really are so well looked after.

My dad has been doing so well, he even walked today and his op was only last Thursday. They’re paying such close attention and are doing such an amazing job. Hope you can see your dad soon and he’s not feeling too rough.

Not too sure about the next scan, I know they sent all the bits to lab for testing. Would also love to know to give me peace of mind! Keep us posted, hope you see him v soon xx

  • Hi Nic123

I'm so pleased your dad's op went well and it sounds like he is making good progress.

I done the same with my grandson, didn't let him visit until the tubes were out as it does look a bit scary.

He will be more comfortable when he is on the ward and he will be walking around before you know it.

He will have a CT scan at some point to check there are no leaks from the surgery. If that is all ok they will get him eating and drinking when he can manage it.

If you are concerned about anything talk to the surgeons and/or the nurses because they will explain each stage.

Thank you for letting me know and I'm so happy for you that your dad came through ok. It's still a way to go yet but he will do it. If you need to talk I'm on here quite regularly

    Best wishes

  • Hi IP20

So pleased to hear your dad is walking around that is a really good sign. Yes they do look after you so well, I had brilliant care when I was in hospital, the Churchill in Oxford.

I have my oncologist appointment on Thursday to see how much chemo I need to make sure it's all gone.

They said they got all the cancer out and histology report was good but they like to make sure with more chemo.

I hope your dad continues to get better and wish you all the very best.

    Best wishes

    Hi Nic

He’s doing okay, thanks. Some lingering side effects of the Radiotherapy, but they’re manageable. You asked about the next scan. I think it depends on where you are in the country. My husband had extra CT scans as the margins weren’t clear when they looked at the sample in the lab. Your dad will also get a pathology staging which is different from the clinical one given at the beginning. My husband’s changed from T3N3M0 to T4aN2M0. It didn’t change the treatment, but changed the life expectancy. There will be a post-op scan but I can’t say which. Also, some parts of the country offer active monitoring once treatment is over, others like ours just say if you have problems or pain then they will re scan, but otherwise you just get appointments with the surgeon at diminishing regularity. Your dad sounds like he’s doing well and long may it continue. Steph
