Operation after Chemo needed?

Hi, my husband was diagnosed in December 2022. He finished 5 weeks of chemo (once a week) and radiotherapy (every day for 5 weeks). 4 weeks ago. He hardly suffered any side effects from this, although he had an infection 2 weeks after it ended. He stopped having the Ensure drinks, all that he could manage at the time, and lost lots of weight and became weak. He turned a corner though the last couple of  weeks, feels great and has started eating solids again. The results of his PET scan are good but the hospital says he must still have the operation. We have an appointment on Friday to see his oncologist I just wanted to know before he sees him if anyone else has been in this position? He now thinks because he feels great and is eating that he might not need it.

would be grateful for any information from the group. I find the information on this group very helpful at a stressful time.

thanks to you all.

  • Hi Zulu

its great to hear how well your husband has coped and is getting on now.  I think it’s quite common to have improvement after chemo as it shrinks the tumour, I know I certainly did.

With regard the op you can only be guided by the specialists I know I still needed the op.

Wishing you both all the best

  • Thank you, thought that would be the case, just don’t want him to get his hopes up.

hope all went well with your op.

  • Hi Zulu, I have been reading your story with interest. It's a really sad state of affairs to be in, both as a sufferer and a carer, family member.

Unfortunately I cannot help as I was only diagnosed in March and so haven't started treatment yet. Have my first oncology appointment on Monday.

I can fully understand your husband's joy at the possibility of not having the big operation. It sounds as if the chemo and radiation regime he's been on have been successful in reducing the size of his tumor. However, I suppose they are always going to go for the belt and braces approach. Even though it's shrunk a lot it hasn't disappeared. While abnormal cells are present there is always the chance of it reoccurring or spreading. I imagine it is your husband's final decision whether to have the op or not. He will have to make that decision based on guidance from the medical team and possibly a little pushing from yourself and other family members.

I think if I end up in that position I'll go for the operation. I don't think I could live knowing I had this loaded gun inside me. They're never going to tell you your cured totally but in mind as long as you've followed the medical advice and done what you can to minimise the risk, it would make me feel more at ease.

Best regards to the both of you.

    Geo.

  • Thank you for your reply. I’m sure he will go for the op after talking to the doctors. He has oncologist app on Friday and then will be passed to Liverpool for the operation. He had a small tumour on his lung (not related) and so they were talking of doing both at the same time, that’s why we have to go there.

I hope your chemo/radiotherapy goes well, my husband had very few side effects from it.

    take care.

  • I am due to have my surgery at Liverpool Royal on 15 June.  Good luck to you both

  • Good luck with your appointment on Monday.  Hope you get the best treatment plan for you and can move forward quickly

  • Hi I hope your husband goes for op as it really is his best chance of recovery. My husband has also been diagnosed with another tumour on his bowel, not related also, and they would not of found it had it not been for the pet scan for oesophageal tumour, He also is having it operated on at same time. Good luck to you both xx

  • Similar to my husband poppop, he had his yearly scan for his kidney cancer, where Lymphoma was found so had a pet scan for that and stomach cancer was seen, he had his stomach out Jan and now is about to start radiotherapy for the Lymphoma. I dread to think what would of happened if he didn’t have that scan.

Zulu your husband really needs the operation as I’m sure if he doesn’t it’ll return. Good luck xx

    Sue Xx
  • Hope. The radiotherapy goes ok and your husband recovers quickly. Yes we would not of known about bowel as no symptoms at all xx
