Oesophageal cancer

Hello, was diagnosed with the above cancer February 2023. I’ve had an ESD in April that did not get rid of all of the tumour. As a result I have been offered an oesophagectomy. The information sheet I was given, reads 2 different procedures depending on what stage the cancer is at. I don’t know, as neglected to as/didn’t think to ask. Did I read the information sheet incorrectly?

Am I hazarding a guess that the surgeons won’t know which procedure is best for me until the time of the actual surgery.

To date I have not made a decision regarding surgery.

Cheers

  • Hi ..I can only speak from my husband’s experience as treatment and surgery tend to be tailored to each individual case …My husband’s oesophagectomy surgery was pre planned before he was given his surgery date so we knew exactly which procedure was going to be  carried out on the day ..You must have lots of questions to ask and we found my husband’s specialist nurses were very helpful in answering any questions we had and they were also very helpful in explaining anything we didn’t understand …It’s a difficult decision when deciding  whether to take the surgical route or not and I know my husband was very undecided when it was first offered to him ..He described it as being ‘between a rock and a hard place’! …He did eventually opt for pre surgery chemo ..surgery and adjuvant chemo and he now feels satisfied it was the suitable route for him …I hope you receive all the answers to your questions …..Good luck with your decision ..

    Regards J

  • Many thanks for your guidance. As yet, I’m trying to understand what questions I should be asking.
