Cognitive decline

Hi, does anyone know if the cognitive decline from a re-occurence is likely to improve? My husband has now completed 6 cycles of TMZ and also on a trial which will finish soon, but i cannot see much difference cognitively. Physically he is fine just weaker than before but its the cognitive aspects that have been affected, lack of concentration, short term memory and difficulty with getting right words out,  comprehension,  and I havnt seen much difference in 5 months.  Hope everyone dealing with this is getting through best they can.

  • Hi Day By Day

Good question. I can only speak from my experience with G. When the oncologist discharged us into the care of the palliative team, cognitively things were very bad. He prescribed steroids again at that point, It took us the best part of a week to convince G to to take them and the difference that that initially low dose of Dex made was incredible. His cognitive function and in particular his speech improved dramatically for a good few months. His short term memory had been pretty non- existent from early in the journey so its hard to say if it improved or not. The Dex kept him on a fairly even keel from March to August. From August to the end of October 2023 when the journey ended we saw a steady decline of cognitive ability, eyesight, balance and speech even with the Dex.

Take each day as it comes but if you are seeing changes that concern you I'd encourage you to call them out to your husband's medical team.

sending you love and light and strength and hugs

  • Hi Wee Me, thank you for your kind words and support I really appreciate and Im so sorry for everthing you and your family have gone through,. He was on a higher dose when the recurrence came about but has now been on 2mg last 2 months and fairly stable on this. Its such a tough road to watch your loved one change, I can barely remember what life was like before. Its the cruellest illness and some days are much harder. I guess im just scared for the future and feel like iv been going through like anticipatory grief and life really is Day by Day xx

  • just remember that your success rate for getting through the tough days is 100%
