What are the signs of GBM recurrence, my mum has gotten much worse a few days after finishing radio and has stayed like this for several weeks. She has trouble with sleep and is suicidal. Her cognitive abilities are getting much more impaired. Is this a sign of recurrence or could it be from radiotherapy. Her symptoms are getting worse rather than better since finishing radio.
Hi dpq,
If it is a result of the radio then it's not a common side effect but it's impossible to rule it out.
If she's suicidal then you need to speak to her consultant/Clinical Nurse Specialist or GP ASAP. It's not a great time if year to get hold of people so you may need to try ringing 111.
Some element of depression is not unusual and I know people are sometimes prescribed antidepressants like sertraline to alleviate this. But if she's as bad as having thoughts about self-harm the approach may be different.
Was your mum able to have surgery before the radio started?
Hope you're able to find some answers to her problems soon.
Chris
Hi Chris, thank you for the reply. She was able to have surgery and she is taking an antidepressant mirtzapine which is not helping her sadly. She cannot take an MRI becayse she keeps moving bjt the consultant told us that her tumor may have gruwn back which is insabe considering how short the amount of time was.
Hi dpq,
when you say recurrance did the radio manage to completely get rid of the tumour or just shrink it a little?
in terms of it being a side effect of radio i am sorry i cant give you the answers however i have a medical background so if you can tell me the loction of the tumour/tumours then i might be able to give you answers in terms of how the location relates to your mums symptoms.
hang on in there. You are doing amazing. its easy for an outsider to say but i completely feel your pain as my dad recieved a diagnosis not long back- i too am quite young, 23, but a little bit older than you <3
