Hi everyone, I’m Chris 36. Just found this forum and wow what a great place to come and share your thoughts or just read others.
So ive just had my bone marrow biopsy which was a very weird experience! More waiting to see if i need radiotherapy or chemo for my treatment plan. Has anyone got a dog while on their treatment plan as Im looking for one to keep me company and get me out on walks…

  • Hi Chris my name is Angela. I am sorry for your diagnosis, you are among friends here. I have NHfollicular lymphoma and was diagnosed during covid. I have had 2 years of treatment and are on the watch and wait plan now. I had my dog during treatment and he was fantastic I really do think that they sence something is wrong. He doesn't leave my side and dont know what I would have done without him, you find yourself talking to them all the time he knows when I have my bad days and is a great comfort to me. Good luck

  • Hi Chris

I'm Cormac and was diagnosed with stage 4 FL just over a year ago. It's no coincidence we now have a 1 year old golden retriever. He's been a God send. I'll not sugar coat it and say he's no hassle. We need the family to help with dog sitting to allow my wife to come with me for treatment. But overall, Bailey (our puppy) is brilliant emotional support for both my wife and I.

I take responsibility for all walks regardless of treatment. It keeps moving when I want to crash on the sofa. It really helps your recovery.

Feel free to ask ant questions and I'll try to answer based on my experience

    Regards

    Cormac

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am sorry to see you joining us. I am Mike and I help out around our various Lymphoma groups.

I don’t have Follicular Lymphoma but for some context I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with a rare (8 in a million) incurable but treatable type of Cutaneous T-Cell NHL (a type of slow growing Low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma….. your FL is also low-grade) ……. eventually reaching Stage 4a in late 2013 when a second, also rare (4 in a million) type of aggressive Peripheral T-Cell - Not Otherwise Specified NHL (a type of fast growing High-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma) was then presenting so although my Lymphoma ‘type’ is different I most definitely appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.

A dog sounds amazing, we don’t have one but our daughter has.

The one thing you need to check out with your clinical team is if you get a puppy…… some consultants are rather hesitant due to the dogs needing vaccines etc….. not that I understand this but worth talking this through with your consultant or CNS as there are times during your treatment where your immune system will be fragile.

  • Hi everyone, hope you are all doing okay.

Just had my bone marrow biopsy results back and some good news! It’s not spread into my bone marrow and will therefore need radiotherapy instead of chemo. Cant lie it’s a huge relief for me and my family. I hope this gives others hope if going through similar experience. Chris x
